VW GOLF ESTATE 1.9 TDI SUITABILITY AS TOW CAR.

Would a 2000 VW Golf 1.9 TDI Avant Estate with genuine 32,000 verified miles on the clock have the ability to tow a 2003 Coachman Amara 5005 with an MPTLM of 1400kg.?
I have been looking at the VW Passat 1.9 TDI Estate to do this job but have been offered the above little beauty which is in immaculate condition and was wondering if it would be up to the task or is the Passat a larger version of the Golf.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You don't say which 1.9TDI variant you are referring to. The 90PS version only has a 1300kg maximum permissible towload whereas the 110PS 4Motion can tow up to 1600kg. The Passat is a larger car and will have correspondingly higher towload limits.

I think it is the 90 version, have just discovered from my daughter the "What Tow Car" web site and the Golf has come back as an unsuitable match however the Passat 2.0 TDI 130+BHP has come up trumps as a suitable match along with the equivelant in the Ford Mondeo.
