VW Passat Blue Motion Estate TDi 2.0

We're thinking of buying a VW Passat estate blue motion 2.0 TDi and would like to know what they are like to tow with and the MPTM they are capable of towing.

Hi there Abbey520 i traded my Passat in a few months ago and have to say it was brilliant, We had the 140 tdi 2.0 estate and it pulled our Challenger 560 with no problems at all the MTPLM of the caravan is 1500kg and i believe the maximum legal towing capacity was 1700kg. Bags of power and torque, It was also brillant on fuel solo driving.

Hi johnandrew70 thanks for the info. I see in another conversation the VW Passat only does 26mpg when towing. Although it's a spacious vehicle it's too long for the garage.

Decided to go for the Passat after all. Although it won't fit in the garage the boot space was the decision maker

You wont regret it, Is it the 140bhp? have you got a towbar on it?

Yes it's the 140 bhp. We need to have a tow bar fitted but it won't be done by the VW dealer. Not sure if to have a detachable one but I'm not sure I would be at ease, as a fixed one won't come off.

Ours was removable and had a cover that went over the hole in the bumper, It was a Thule and can recommend it mine was fitted by a towbar specialist recommended by the dealer who i happened to know anyway, Also going back to the Passat you will love the Auto Hold feature.

The dealer has given me the towbar specialist details who they use. I might go for a removable towbar due to the Passat being a decent length.

Oh yes was quite smitten with the test drive. I agree the Auto Hold was impressive. You can't tell the engine has turned off until you hear it kicking in when you put it into first gear to pull off. Looking forward to picking it up

A bit late to the party on this tread, but I cant rate the Passat highly enough.
Ive had two Mk7 (B7?) models now, both with the CR140 engine, one manual and the current one DSG.
I tow 1330kg of Sterling Europa, it swallows the kit in the boot, is comfortable over the distance, and, although im not very experienced towing, hasnt had me worrying about stability etc etc like the old Skoda used to.
I got an aftermarked detachable bar fitted to the latest one, with the car specific loom. Fitted at my house for about £500, all the factory fit funtions work (like cutting out the car fog lamp/parking sensors, alarm detecting the caravan being unplugged and TSP etc)
Reversing camera if you get it is a major boon too - Mrs K no longer has to stand in the 'danger area' directing me to hitch up!

I'm on my fourth passat now , the last one I had was the passat estate 140 2.0sport but got shot, though it was a brilliant car to tow with few things went wrong with the 2ltr so I now have the 1.9 tdi estate and never had a bit of bother, be nice to have that extra 30 bhp but still not to bad!!! But size wise there isn't much movement at all! Highly recommend the passats!

We also have a 58 plate 140TDi CR estate bought 3 years old, and it is by far the best vehicle we have ever owned. We did however have a problem - one of the rear springs snapped and the whole thing sat down. I got two new ones (same make as fitted by VW) and was able to replace the failed unit myself - with some bad language thrown in! However couldn't change the other so asked my tame garage to do it for me and they found the bottom bit of the other had failed as well!
We too have the Thule removable ball but be aware that whilst the chassis will take 90Kg noseweight (the highest in its class by a margin) the hitch is only rated 85Kg.
The ultrasonic parking sensors make life so easy (SWMBO says she will never have another car without them.) Ours has now done 101K and still does 50+mpg around town. Towing we have been as low as 27.7 but with careful driving, use of the cruise control, keeping the revs around 2K, and staying between 55 and 60 last week on a trip to and from Bath (from Harrogate - 236 miles) we averaged 32.2mpg although that is exceptional, 30-30.5 being more the norm.
One error to correct: fitting the towbar does not trigger TSP - it has to be activated in the ECU by a dealer and I understand they charge around £300 for about 15 minutes work.
This is our fourth VAG vehicle (Golf, Toldeo, Octavia, and now Passat) and it will be very difficult to get us to buy any other make now.

We have the Skoda version , that is 140 bhp with DSG box. pulling a Swift Charisma 535. Skoda say max,weight is 1400 klg so we run at about 1335 klg. MPG is around 31+ . Solo on our run up to Dartford tunnel often reads 65.70 mpg. Over the time since new our average is 43 mpg thats on 55600 miles which includes towing to France and all parts of uk..

Just for info, I have a Vw passat alltrack 2.0i diesel 170 ps, it's a blue motion. Pulls my bailey Cadiz like a dream. Built in swivel factory fitted tow bar, dsg. Amazing car that does about 28mpg when towing, about 47-50 solo.

Talking about noseweight i found our Passat Estate a little soft when applying 85kg to the rear end so decided to fit spring assisters from http://www.springassisters.co.uk/
the jockey wheel was lifted well away from the surface of the road and the car handled fine. Infact when i traded the car in i forgot to take them out. never mind.
