I have just taken delivery of a new VW Tiguan with factory fitted towbar and electrics. On purchasing a adapter to convert my euro plug on the car to 12n and s on the caravan from my local tow bar fitter he anticipated i may have a problem. He has seen a lot of new volkswagens through the workshop where neither the fridge or the battery charger will work. Also no audible connector is fitted for the indicators. Having connected the caravan i can confirm this is the case, none of the above work.If other VW owners have had this problem how helpful are VW in correcting this issue?I have not yet approached the VW dealer.

Hi Paul

Until this year we had a vw golf - now 3 years old - with vw towbar and electrics. Everything seemed to work fine in the caravan and we now have a new touran which also seems to be ok, although I haven't tried the fridge yet, the battery was certainly more charged up after we arrived on site than before we left home.

Re the audible warning - I think you will find that most vws work on the opposite principle - you only get a warning if something is malfunctioning, not if it is working. This is perfectly legal and some other makes of car are the same.

However, do check with your dealer as your vehicle may not be the same as ours.

Good luck - Catherine

Hi, I've had a Tiguan since last May.

You need to order, 'The line feed adaptor kit' which is available as a VW kit does the fridge and charging. My dealer knew I was caravanner and fitted it before I took delivery.

There is no audible warning fitted, but the bulb failure warning tells you if a bulb is not working, I find that better to be warned that a bulb has failed BEFORE I indicate rather than AFTER I've started to indicate.

Also the car alarm will sound if you disconnect the caravan plug while the car is alarmed.

Hope this helps a little.

Is the line feed adaptor kit a "diy plug in" item or a dealer fit item.

Thanks Paul

Hi, Paul, I had the kit fitted by the dealer. I always used to fit my own towbars and wiring, but with these new cars, and the possibility of damaging the electronics and voiding the warrranty, I leave it to the Pro's!

I have a couple of relays fed by three in-line fuses fitted under the bonnet, but I haven't traced any wiring so I wouldn't know were to pick up the ignition feed or how to get the wiring behind the trim.

Just for the record, it's had a new dual mass flywheel and clutch in 5000 miles, it made a nasty clicking noise when doing hill stsrts with the caravan on.

Vernon unless it was a simple plug in operation i had no intention of doing it myself!

From what you are saying it and speaking to my local towbar fitter it looks like he may be doing the work for the local VW dealer. He had a nearly new Tourag in the workshop when i visited and was trying to get wires from the front to the rear.I had the factory towbar fitted to avoid any warranty issues with aftermarket electrics and towbars.Looks like a trip to the dealer who then might send me hopefully with there approval to the towbar fitter.

Paul,

I have a Passat which has the same system and whilst the line feed kit comes with instructions you are faced with routing a cable from front to back of the car. My dealer did this as part of the original towbar fitting.
