Hi, I have a 2001 sterling Eccles sapphire with a whale water pump, my question is where would I find the filter my local dealer said it might be in the van itself but then again may not even have one as not all vans are fitted with one, personally I would rather have one any idea where It could be, or could I fit one myself if so what and where would I fit it, thanks.

If you look inside the caravan at the side where the pump connection is situated on the outside you will see the incoming water pipe - probably blue or clear with blue markings. Follow this and it will go to your water heater and to taps in keitchen and tolilet room area including a shower if you have one.

If you have a filter it is likely to be a cylinder 6 or more inches long and 2 to 3 inches diameter according to type and having two connections. It should be in a position such that it can be reached fairly readily. If you can't find it easily you probably have not got one - not unusual on a van of that period.
If you want to fit on, it should go into the cold water line before any branches to taps or tee connections (one to water heater and one to taps) such that all the water that comes in goes through the filter.
You can get disposable or rechargeable filters - personally I prefer the latter and one sgood supplier is Filtapac www.filtapac.co.uk
You buy the outer container with fittings and then subsequently just the rechage kit. Fitting is fairly easy involving cutting the water pipe and fitting the filter body in line - you will probably need two fairly small hose clips. No electricity is involved. Filter can be either horizontal or vertical but remember you have to take the top off to change the element and you will release a small oamount of water in the process. You may wish to drain the system before fitting.

Unless you are prepared to change it every 30 days once it gets wet they can become a perfect breeding ground for bacteria.
The water quality in the UK is very good and a filter will do nothing to improve that, but it may well detract from it.

Cut one open once and it was full of slime.I use a brass 1/8 BSP fitting on the pipe to give it some weight and do without a filter altogether

I'd agree a filter is not really necessary for most UK sites but in Europe particularly Spain water for showering and washing up etc. (NOT for drinking) can be pretty cloudy and this gets through and builds up in shower heads etc.
