Water Heater

we have just returned from a night away in our van, took the van to the storage place (about 45 mins away), got home and I remembered I had not switched off the water heater switch. we didn't know if this would run off battery and try and heat up water that wasn't there (I had drained all water from system) so we got back in car and drive back to storage place and had to take caravan out just to go and flick a switch! Hubby was not pleased! Did we actually have to do this? (just out of interest) we thought it better to be safe than sorry but was it really necessary?

joanne, I presume you mean the mains electric switch for the water heater. If I'm correct and if your van is not conected to an electric supply then nothing would happen.

The water can only be heated by mains electric or gas and not by the battery.

Joanne, as Ray has said, the electric water heater is only powered by 240 volts.

Did you have to go back and switch it off? No, not really, BUT you will have probably saved yourself a problem next time you take the van out, as if you plug into the mains before filling the water system , you may cause the heater element to suffer damage.
