Hello, It's just over a year since we used our caravan, it is a 1994 Swift Challenger, as stated in my newbie post she is in great nick. I was just wondering do I need to purify/ sterilise the water system before we use it ?, if so how and what with ?, any advise would be muchly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes , I use Puriclean Make sure the whole system is full of the advised mixture, including the waste container. And leave for a number of hours. Although that's up to you. Then flush through with fresh water. I use the system as I would at home, drinking water out of taps, so I do mine twice a year, again that's up to you.
I wouldn't use Milton or the like, as it can attack the metal parts in your system and it can leave a plastic taste in the system

I do exactly the same as DaveA1 by using Puriclean, then flush and forget it. I repeat the process if our van is unused for more than a couple of weeks.

We have two aquarolls, plus an onboard tank. I fill both Aquarolls and insert Puriclean, leave them a couple of ours or so. Then push one of the barrels through to the onboard tank, letting it stand for a similar amount of time. Swithing the onboard tank off to let stand, I push the second Aquaroll through the system until empty. Once the onboard has stood, I drain both the onboard and the normal water lines. I then push two new aquarolls with fresh water through, one for each system and run them out, and then drain down.

I have heard of people putting orange juice through the system, but I dont see any benefits to that. We never drink from the caravan, we always carry a fresh water drinking container. To be honest, as we never drink from the system, perhaps we dont even need to do what we do. The onboard tank can be heated to anti-microbial levels via the Alde panel, and we do that the first night on site.

Even if you dont drink water from your caravan taps, use puriclean at least once a year, you don't want to get legionnaires disease from your bathroom sink or shower.

I always run hot water on high setting when I first pitch, if not on electric certainly on gas. Along with the fresh dose of Chlorine, that should deal with it, although I don't think Legionnaires has been a problem. After all I've had quite a few cold showers in hot summers, although this year you wouldn't think we have them.
