I seem to remember someone on the forum told us how to find the weight of these bottles once they have been used.

If I remember right it was something to do with the weight around the bottles neck!

I have tried "wild cards" on forum search but cannot bring up anything regarding gas bottles, I know this must be wrong.

Please can someone help, as we are looking to put them in the free paper tomorrow for sale.

If you have got a full bottle as well, weigh the full bottle then weigh the empty bottle and take that away from the first weight.

Hey Presto!.....the weight of an empty bottle.

Hi Litespeed

I don't have any full bottles, just one 12kg and two 15kg with some gas in all of them. I just weighed them on bathroom scales so I am hoping this new weight is the combined weightso if I minus the bottle weight I should then have my gas weight, would you agree with this calculation.

Hello Allyson.

Most LPG UK is sold be weight. This avoids the problems of volume change with temperature. During filling the bottle is continually weighed, and so to make sure the bottle is not over filled, the filler must know the weight of the empty bottle. To help with this most UK bottles will have the empty weight of the bottle stampped onto them. This is known as the TARE weight.

When you buy a refil the total weight of the bottle will be the Tare weight plus the charge of gas.

Equally by weighing a part used bottle, If you subtract the tare weight you will be left with the weight of the gas the gas left in the bottle.

Hi Allyson,

Weight of Calor Butane Gas bottle as per caravan courses hand book 2002 supplied by the caravan club on one of there towing courses.

7Kg Bottle Butane full bottle weighs 15Kg, of this the TARE weight(empty case)is 8kg giving you the weight of Gas 7Kg,

4.5 Kg Bottle Butane full bottle weighs 10.2 KG TARE weight 5.7 Kg Gas 4.5 Kg

As per John L comments I always subtract the TARE weight from the actual bottle weight before each trip ( bathroom Scales) Lets me know how much gas we have .

Hello Royston,

I have not seen the Caravan course book, so I rely on your description. What does not quite make sence is that if you look at the Tare weights a collection of Calor Bottles (the same type and size) the weights are different, so the statement about total weight of a 7Kg bottle being 15Kg will be inaccurate.

The reason for these differences is that there are many different manufacturers of LPG bottles, so there are many different detail designs and tollerances of the components that are used to make the bottle. I should stress that all LPG bottles supplied in the UK must be approved and shown to meet the relvant safety standards, so the differences will not affect the use of these bottles.

To assess the actual weight of gas in a bottle you must always weigh the bottle and subtract the bottles tare weight.
