My avatar has changed itself again and my signature picture has disappeared (at the time of writing, 20:45 hrs).

Very strange.

Yes Rita, you're perfectly correct. The signature photo has re-appeared. I can assure you it wasn't showing when I made my post.

All very strange.

It's showing now and it was showing when I replied to Rita. I don't understand why my avatar changes back and forth though.

Could be caching on your computer, which is calling up the old image...

It could be this

Thanks for pointing this out, it's a hangover from adding our CDN, (content delivery network) that has improved the performance of the site. A CDN "caches" all of the images and other static files so the main site doesn't have to serve them hence the improvement in performamce.

In short the pictures are getting updated but the CDN isn't picking them up, we are looking into it right now and will at least have an answer fairly soon.

Or it could be this

We aren't using the CDN on the site at the moment since we moved to the new servers so it can't be that. It may be local caching. If you hold down the "shift" key and press refresh it should only load the new version of the avatar.

By the way LMH advertising in your footer is breaking the terms and conditions of the site, (and adding a huge picture will slow everything down for people a fair amount to...)

I've removed the link to Appleby Horse Fair. It's not an advertisement actaully, it's just an informative website. Appleby Fair is not an ‘organised’ event and is not run or licensed by any organisation. There's only a few stall holders selling things, I could understand it if I had put 'buy your saddles here' for instance but to complain about a link to an informative page which gives advice to visitors and tourists and call it 'advertising' is incredulous.

Also, I've removed my 'huge' photo which should now speed up the forum no end.

Thanks
The fair is over and done with for this year anyway.

Thats perfectly correct, no doubt the site will be updated soon, probably when they publish the findings of the evaluation forms and stats.

I personally didn't have a problem with the commerciality or otherwise of the link, but I do with links and pics in signatures in general, for technical and anti-spam reasons. Hence I think we're going to remove the ability to put HTML in one's signature altogether. No reflection on the contents of your sig (apart from the size of the pic, which I found obtrusive) - just general housekeeping.

That would help John, both Damian and myself have removed several spam posts ( I got rid of one for toothpaste of all things yesterday) and many of the spammers post links as part of their sig's to test whether HTML will work on this website.
If they try and then discover no HTML most of them will give up and move on. Over on Sitefinder the moderators had a nightmare trying to get rid of constant spamming attacks and we don't want to see quack medication (or worse) adverts on this site.
Will it still be possible to add links to normal postings? We can monitor those easily enough.

Yes, absolutely, wouldn't want to remove that capability (or that of inserting images) at all. It's just that signatures are ripe for spamming (over on What Hifi, for example, we've taken the step of automatically banning anybody who signs up and puts html in their signature for that very reason).

For the non-techies amongst us (of which I am the No. 1 member).....I don't understand all this talk of html - what is it? (In simple, non-techie language please). I've heard of it, of course, but haven't a clue what it means - and I don't just mean what the abbreviated letters actually stand for.

It stands for HyperText Markup Language, and it's what websites use to define what goes where, what links to what, and generally make a site function: if you go to your web-browser's menu bar, and select 'view source' or something similar, you'll see all the HTML – the nuts'n'bolts of the page you're viewing.
In this case, we're talking about HTML being used to create a link like this which, when clicked, will take you to another site.
This is used by many an unscrupulous advertiser, or spammer, to put something in their post – or signature until JD and the guys block it – to advertise their wares.

We've blocked the membership of those who tried posting adverts, something that wasn't possible on the old PCv forum.
Oh the power!!!!!

Thanks for removing the HTML in the signature part, it seems a non useful thing to have anyway, and it has been abused.

The number of spam posters has been quite amazing but I think we have managed to block pretty much all of them so far, but still have to keep an eye on some posts.

Thanks Andrew, that's all, erm, as clear as mud......I can't help it, I'm blonde!!! It's a bit like algebra at school (which I hated and never actually learnt coz I just couldn't be ar...umm, bothered) - not really worth understanding because 'normal' people (and by that I mean - well - non-techies like me) will never use it in normal, everyday life - well, not knowingly, anyway, lol. But thank you for your detailed explanation, even though it still means nowt to me, hehe.

Sue - I must admit to also not having a clue about "html" but I am a firm believer that by keeping my mouth shut and not showing my ignorance sooner or later someone will ask what it is and I will have the answer. However although the question has been answered I am like you none the wiser. My only difference to you and your last reply was that I did enjoy all forms of maths. at school especially algebra and trigonometry - not so hot with calculus. I still enjoy maths. and have helped both my children and now the grandchildren with their GCSE course work tutoring.

Therefore in conlusion I will keep mum over various technical problems and hopefully sooner or later you will ask the question for me and I will hopefully then have the answer. LOL

I'm a great asker, Colin.....if you don't ask, you don't get, that's my philosophy. Even if I don't understand the answer! And I hate maths, always did, complete mystery to me. Thank god for calculators and electronic tills!

To draw lines, link to websites, add colour or different text styles the web technicians cant simply take a pen and draw say, a border round a post.
Computer screens display the effects that are created by the writers of the website or webmasters.
To produce these effects a 'language' is used which is in effect the technicians pen and paper, in this instance Hyper Text Markup Language which allowed links to be included in forum signatures.
If admin disable HTML for signatures all that it means is that a sentence (or string) is missing from the mass of HTML used to create the webpage so that it will work within posts but not on signatures.
Seemples!

For example, Sue, to your computer and the servers on which this website runs, your rather fetching pink type isn't just a colour, it's
< h4><span style="color: #800080;" >
That's what tells the computer to show your immortal words in pink, rather than standard black – and that's HTML.

Purple prose?
Now that I do understand.....are you saying my tongue (fingers) runs away with me and I (or you!) suffer with flowery (and lengthy) adjective overdose??!? pmsl Do you know, I wish I hadn't asked now, tee hee. Thanks Andrew, Parksy, JD (and his maths degree - pah!) et al, I shall retire back to my knitting of lace doyleys (or I would if I knew how). (Note to self - in future, don't meddle in things you don't understand) ;o)
