Weird Weather

About 8am this morning I was outside tidying up. I had on no coat, just my jeans and short sleeved polo shirt. Today is January 13th and it just doesn't add up. Whilst cleaning up from the high winds I couldn't help but notice how the plants in my garden are growing. The Passiflora is bright green with new growth as it rambles up through a conifer. I spotted most of my Fuchsias are in growth, some types still having last years leaves. I noticed also one species in flower. The fronds on my Tree Ferns have still the same lustre has they did during the summer. A species of Clematis I have growing, Clematis florida seiboldii, is only half hardy but it has one flower out in bloom but what surprised me even more was the sight of a big plump green caterpillar eating the petals. The water lillies on my pond still haven't retreated to the bottom for their winter slumber, some are still in leaf and I'm fully expecting the early arrival of the frogs to spawn and their raucous croaking at night. The males are so randy my poor fish have no peace because they try to get on their backs too. I'm not into the argument of what's causing the weather to warm up but warm up it certainly is. Snow is virtually unheard of now and when it does snow it doesn't last more than 24 hours. If anyone says the weathers no different then they need their head checking unless they are about 20 years old and have never experienced the frosts, and snow and bitter cold like we used to get. I must admit I can cope with this because I hate the cold. Last winter the weather men were forecasting a new ice age and a winter like 62/63 but what happened - nothing. This winter the same, in November the media were full of it saying we would be hit by another 62/63 winter with temperatures down to -10c by late December. I suppose one day, by the law of averages, they will be right but which century I'm not sure. Certainly weird weather though.

Weather sure is strange, LB. Down here we've had constant heavy rain with only one day clear in over two weeks now. My paddock has surface water on it, something I've never seen before. There is so much water coming off the mountain that it has burrowed underground at one point. Don't know where it goes from there! You're right though, temperature is high for Jan uary, but the high winds keep it cold in exposed places. Unlike you, I don't really mind the cold, but the constant damp is beginning to get to me. Herself is confined to her wheelchair just now, so we can't go out, and that is getting to her too. We're both going stir-crazy!I've had to shave so much off the back door due to damp, that we won't need to open it to get out when it dries out!Roll on Spring.

It's been raining a lot here too Adrian, and gales, but it's not cold because they are southerlies. The last frost we had was at least two months ago and I saw that we were heading for record night temperatures. One night around Christmas was recorded at 11c. There is one consolation, we do need the rain to fill up the aquifers because they are still low even if the reservoirs are becoming full.

I forgot to empty the hot water tank (we were going away again in Dec and cancelled) so I have been keeeping a close eye on the local weather forecast in case I need to make a one off 40 mile round trip through Bristol to the storage to empty it.

(I did expect to be passing that way before now)

Since early December our local weather has not gone near zero and is forecast this week to stay between 9-12 deg C.

Winter seems to have disappeared!
