What do you do when you have to leave site at 12 noon.

I have just booked our very first site at Grin Low near Buxton, which we will visit, direct from collecting our Challenger 570 from Glossop Caravans. I have booked for the Friday & Saturday night and the conditions are that we have to leave by 12noon on the Sunday. What can we do with the rest of the afternoon with the van in tow, or do we have to head for home that early? If we were staying at a hotel, we would find a walk in the area, taken from the AA 1000 Walks in the UK book, and leave for home about 5/6pm. However to now do this, we would have to find a safe parking place for the caravan, and apart from caravan sites, are there any readily available ?

This then raises the same question for all the weekends that we would intend to go on. As we are still both working we would not be able to leave until 6pm on the Friday, so fairly local sites are what we would using, this is no problem as there are plenty of options available from Bedford in all directions. But is it worth the effort if you have to head home on the Sunday at 12noon, leaving you only 1 full day to explore the area.

I look forward to hearing from all you experienced caravanners, as to how you deal with this situation, that I have outlined, or am I worrying for no reason?

Best regards,

George

Yes it is annoying when you have to leave at noon, but look at the other way, if you were arriving at noon you would need a pitch. Now that that is out of the way you can always ask the person in charge if you can stay longer, if that is not possible because they are fully booked they may have an area that you can move the van to.

Having said all that I have had to leave and the park has only been one third full.... perhaps they were expecting a rush!!

To be honest .. if you were in a hotel you would NOT check out at 5... .. most have a 12:00 checkout as standard .. so no difference. They exist to get the place cleaned and the next "night stopper" in .. exactly the same as the caravan park. If you want to leave that late you have to book an extra night, as you are effectively stopping that pitch being used.

Your options are.. as I see it ... either CL's or rallies as these are usually far more flexible on departure times ..

CL's are the same rules as Big sites as they to need time to prepare the pitch for next caravan

If you want to do some sightseeing in the afternoon by car, but without the hassle of having the caravan in tow, I've found that some sites the require you to vacate your pitch by 12 o'clock will let you park the caravan elsewhere in a quiet corner for a couple of hours and you can pick it up again later. It would be worthwhile asking.

The wardens at Grin Low are some of the best I have met.HAve a word with them you arive and I am sure tehy will allow you to stay a bit later either on the pitch or elsewhere like the late arrivals area.

The fact is you would be angry if you couldn't get onto your pitch until 5.00pm because someone had gone walking??????? 12.00 midday is a pretty standard departure time.

You'll enjoy Buxton and the surrounding area. I always walk the dogs upto Solomons Temple every morning. Clears the cobwebs.

Cheers

Some CC sites have a blackboard with departure times on

As most people leave on Sunday after the weekend its often possible to stay on if the site has vacancies on Sunday evening

You could see if they have by trying to book on the CC website without confirming and then approach the wardens

Hello All,

Nigel I fully understand the need to vacate pitches/rooms to make ready for the following people. We were in Tamworth with our grandaughter for the Easter weekend, in the Holiday Inn Express, and cleared our room by 11am. We placed all our luggage in our car, and left it safely in the Hotel Car Park, until we left Tamworth at about 4-30pm.

The question I was asking is what do you do with the caravan for the rest of the day, or do the sites allow you to park up in a holding area, until later in the day. If you go walking, is it safe to leave a caravan in a possible out of the way parking place. I am looking for the benefit of regular caravanners experience, as to how they approach the problem in spending the main part of the last day, on any trip, be it short or long.

Thanks for all the responses to date.

Best regards,

George

Hi George, we have been in similar situations and have always found the site wardens helpful. There is usually room to park the van away from the pitches.Good luck and enjoy your first trip with the new caravan.

Hi George

On most of the C&CC certified sites that we've stayed on the owners have never appeared to be overly concerned about what time we left.

I don't know if the CC club is the same, the quiet 5 van sites are often more relaxed than main sites because there are not always other people waiting for a pitch. As others have advised always ask the site owner or warden, they will usually try to help.

Whatever you do DONT leave your caravan parked anywhere other than on a site even if it's hitched to your car because the locks etc would present no problem for those who steal caravans.

Hi George,

We live next door to you(well next county anyway) and like you we both work but enjoy getting away for weekends. We always ask ourselves the same question before we set out. Do we need to be back for Sunday afternoon. If so, then leaving at 12 noon is no hassle. If we decide to stay later we always enquire before we go. Most sites are accomodating and some sites charge an extra

You are paying for a 24 hour period on the site usually from 12 noon to 12 noon. Of course there is a 'clean up' period so the site usually like you to leave by 11 am and not arrive until after 2 pm, if possible. However most sites will allow you to arrive after 12 noon. Some sites will allow you to stay longer, if the site is quiet, but it is purely a 'grace and favour' gesture

There is nothing more frustrating than arriving around 2 pm, searching for a pitch, as you do with the CC, finding one that is ok, but not the best and setting up. Then at 5 pm a load of people pack up and leave and all the good pitches are now free. You either pack it all away again and move, or just grumble about 'selfish so and so's.'

So, as others have mentioned, if you wish to stay longer, especially in high season then pay for the night. It is not that expensive.

If you pay for an extra night, do you get a sign to hang up so people know that you are not just a selfish so and so, or do eperienced caravaners just know who is and who isn't.

in time you will find sites that suit your requirements, we return to two sites just about every year, for at lest one visit.

At present we are booked in to our favourite, its a commercial, adult only, booked in to day, none of the CC carry on were the block booking spoils it for everyone, (i am a member), asked if we could arrive early, yes no problem, but make it after ten, so we can cut the grass, and i know provided no one is booked in on departure day, that we can stay as long as we like, with out extra charge, our other favourite is a Cl, or was not now, but we still think of it as one, with exactly the same arrangement, phone up book in, if no ones on the pitch, arrive when you like, same when you leave

We ask politely and if it`s reasonable i.e not appearing busy and we have always been allowed to stay a couple of hours extra. Not every place we go but many.

The only thing is Joby. What if these people had arrived one night very late on their pitch and knackered from work, given a lot of money to the site, their main holiday and they just wanted a few hours to chill before going home. They wouldnt know it was `your` pitch

if the site rules specifically state a pitch vacation time then people should adhere to it. As is so common in our society these days it appears the rules and laws e so often ignored. (Use of mobile phones when driving is one thing that drives me blummin potty).

I always make sure that we are up and off the pitch before the required vacation time.
