Hello Paul

I'm the publishing director of Practical Caravan. It was me who requested the post be removed. We have long had a policy of "no naming and shaming" on this forum.

A forum operates on exactly the same legal principles (though with murkier and less clear precedents) as that of a newspaper or magazine where libel and defamation rules are concerned. I was not happy with the content of the post, or the direction in which it would have taken with further comments. So it's gone.

We have no general desire to suppress debate and the sharing of information, quite the reverse in fact. There may well be other forums which take a less rigorous view of posts like this, but I'm afraid we're not one of them. I'm sorry if you disagree, and hope you understand.

Andrew - the alternative to libel and defamation rules appling would be freedom of speach. I can fully understand that should a comment be made at a person or company which causes insult being removed - that is what the mods. are there for - however where general statements regarding this firm are concerned such as the shutting of a particular branch I think this is benificial to the public in not wating time, fuel, etc. to go there and then find it closed. Could also relate to the problems associated with warrenty, etc.

I agree with Colin, and having worked in the newspaper industry for a number of years, I can't help feeling that advertising revenue or the loss of it was a major factor in the removal of the post.

If ever there was an issue with an advertiser, our ad reps were informed and the article would go ahead regardless.

I thought the answer is obvious - they have suffered like alot of companies have in the current climate. They are a private company so their affairs are private.Unless they owe people money then information should be available but only through legal methods.

Hi Colin

There has been a long running thread with regards to the closure of branches and questions about warranties and this has not been removed, there's no problem with that at all.

The thread that has been removed only had one post, and was of a different nature.

Graham (Ponty): It's easy to create a conspiracy theory here but I'm afraid this has nothing to do with advertising. Discover has not run pages with us for months, and neither are they likely to in the near future! So our only consideration is that we prefer not to incur costs in unnecessary legal disputes.

We don't allow advertisers to influence our editorial, and have plenty of war wounds over the years that prove the point!

Meanwhile, feel free to continue posting about general issues with regards to the changes at Discover.

Thanks

Andrew

Hi Jonathan,

The original post regarding Discover was to inform people of what was happening with branches closing down at very short notice. There was a post on here a couple of weeks ago where somebody had his caravan in Newport Discover Leisure having warranty work carried out to it, when it closed without notice, leaving his caravan in the compound unable to get it out and unfinished work still to be done.

So it's not their private affairs people are interested in it's whether or not to book a service or have warranty work carried out. I ordered a new blind for my caravan from Discover Newport about three weeks before it closed. I had to pay the

I was not at home this afternoon so have no knowledge of any post which may have appeared and been removed today concerning any company but there are three posts which give information to members on the next page of the forum under 'general'.

I was the originator of the topic concerned and would like to say that I did not wish to cause any concern regarding having a go at the company concerned, I only wished to warn people not to go and loose all their money. Yes I was employed as a salesman with the retailership concerned, but I would like to add that I have been a caravaner for 40 years am an ex submariner in the Royal Navy and also a retired Police Motorway Patrol Officer and on leaving the Police obtained employment as a caravan salesman and thoroughley enjoyed every minute of the 8 years I was there until the 31st May 2009 when it closed. I treated people exactley how I would like to be treated, but unfortunately that is not the way that the owners wanted, hence my warning in the first place. I am not so stupid as to be liabious but I come from the old school where I am afraid that the "TRUTH" always seems to hurt and upset.

does practical caravan, other caravan forums and magazines not have a moral responsibility to warn their readers and cutomers of exactly what is happening with discover?

The terms of Discovers CVA are accessible on the web. The effect of this includes the redundancies of many staff, who will recieve only a tiny portion of the redundancy pay, holiday pay and payment in lieu of notice that they would be entitled to in 'normal' circumstances but due to the actions of Discover this will now be paid by the government. In other words paid out of the income tax of the country - which includes all Discover customers.

Under the CVA creditors will recieve 23% of their outstanding debt over 5 years.

Anyone want to visit a Discover Branch today, offer them just over

Companies all over Britain are shedding jobs not just Discover and taking the cheapest way to do it has the backs hold purse strings, we forget that the reason we are in this mess is due to this government and the banking industry of this country.

l my self have had to take early retirement due to my ex-company moving all work abroad to India and China.

Companies like Discover are having to take tough decisions to survive, l am in the same boat as all of you having bought a new van last year from Discovers Warrington Branch, l now find l have to travel to the Chorley to have the van serviced and warranty work done.

Chorley have taken over my warranty problems and have booked my van for its first service and have had good contact with the people their, and cannot fault Discovers commitment to honour the sales agreement l took up at Warrington

I feel sorry for the people that have lost jobs but its not Discovers fault we are in the worst recession since the thirties, l just hope things change for the better by the end of the year.

Does anyone know whether Trevor, Keith or Lee who all worked at Discover Orpington are still working with caravans. They were always so helpful and friendly and just wondered if they were involved with caravans now. Would be pleased to hear from anyone who can answer this. Many thanks - Chris.

Hi Trevor, just wanted to say thank you for all your help with sorting out the phantom on our caravan. They have been down and everything is o.k. We would like to get in touch with Keith and Lee, any ideas how we can do that. There are no problems at the moment (!) but we would like to use them. In the meantime although not your choice we wish you every happiness on your retirement. Get that caravan on the road and who knows we may bump into you in Switzerland one day! All the very best Fred and Chris

Hello Fred, I had an idea that it would be you, nice to hear from you, and glad that all is ok. You can get hold of Keith on 020 8308 1633 or 07549 381622 he wont mind me giving the numbers out. Should be doing what your doing in about 3/4 months time once everything is sorted out. To be quite honest if I dont hear that name begining with "D" again I should be ok, still as long as I dont travel further North than Watford Gap I will be ok. My best regards to the Mesarb and like you said, you never know when we may meet up, I'll keep a cold one in the fridge just in case. Many regards Trevor
