Hi

We've just been given a 1985 Abbey GT415 and I've noticed the ceiling in the toilet/shower area and the back quater of the ceiling is sagging. I think I've found where the leak is coming from (seal gone on skylight), but while prodding away I've managed to bring some of the ceiling down, and exposed the insultation

Does anybody know what it's usually made of? Is it a fibreglass material or would it be something more serious like asbestos based?

Shaun Ive just welcomed you in the new members section and advised you seek a service, this post emphasises this, damp is not a pretty sight. And the way you describe it in this post looks like it has been ongoing for some time I did a damp repair on walls to an Abbey but not the ceiling so I cant help with the insulation in the roof but some one will be along to tell you more.
One more point, damp can spread and when you start to uncover the area you think it is in it can go a lot deeper and could affect the main timber framework, I do hope it's not as bad as it sounds and sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear.

Hello Shaun,
I'm pretty certain the insulation will not be asbestos- the dangers of asbestos were well known by 1985.

Hi Shaun
Our first caravan was an Eccles Topaz which was manufactured in the early 80s and the insulation behind the wall boards was foam and in the roof it was a sort of fibre glass wool similar to old style loft insulation. As the Prof said, it's highly unlikely that the insulation from the 80s would contain asbestos but if you want to make sure you could pop over to the Swift Forum and get the information direct from Swift who bought Abbey.
I'm not trying to get rid of you

, don't forget to come back but Swift Talk is run by people who work at Swift so hopefully they'd have access to information about the insulation used.
