Bit of a moan I'm afraid.

25 Years ago we bought our house. We could have bought one twice as big for the same price in a less desirable area but I wanted to stay in this area which is described as a 'leafy suberb'.

For around 20 years, we've never had any trouble really, just the odd pint of milk being stolen, the odd lost cat.

Oh, how things have changed. There used to be lots of surronding fields but gradually, those have been sold off and the developers moved in. We were always amazed that people would pay £650,000 plus for a four bed detached house with a tiny garden, facing onto main road, or crammed into a cul-de-sac but each to their own.

Anyway, along with the nice designer type houses, the developers had to build 'affordable housing' for those less fortunate than us.

That's when the trouble started.

For the past 5 years or so, the yobs have started going around in gangs causing mayhem. Little kids run riot across the car park at Morrisons and Asda. Extra police have to be drafted in on a Friday and Saturday night to deter the little thugs on the avenue where a selection of bars and bistros have sprung up. Some of these kids are only 5+.

I popped out last night in my car at about 5pm. As I was driving along, I didn't notice a gang of six. As I passed them, thump, something hit my car with great force. I stopped the car, and there was a small dent on the side of the vehicle.

The gang, apart from one mouthy lad, all covered their faces with scarves. Well, me being me, challenged them and I was racially and verbally abused. The ringleader, black hoodie aged 15 got menacingly close. I stood my ground and our heated conversation ended with me saying 'I'll go and see your mother about this (I know where they live). This was met with 'I don't live there anymore'.

Anyway, off they went. I've made enquiries about this kid and its mother. Turns out she's a violent schizophrenic and I was warned not to go to see her if I valued my life.

So, I've left it.

My neighbour had three bikes stolen from their garden two weeks ago. We had an intruder in the house around the same time (15 year old runaway, black hoodie again). The police dealt with it.

My little Gaylord pinned the lad to the wall whilst I called the police, who had already been mobilised by a neighbour calling them first. My dog never actually made contact with the intruder, he was just protecting me and his home. However, the police have persuaded me not to press charges as the lad is saying I set the dog on him and I might have trouble proving otherwise which could result in well, you know what. Did I invite this youth in? NO. did I know he was on my landing? NO. Who spotted the youth first, me or my dog? THE DOG.

What a sorry state of affairs.

If your Dog did not bite or scratch the individual concerned you would have nothing to fear. If you don't press charges you are guilty of not following the rules of being a good citizen. Not an easy choice !!!

Hi Frank

Thanks for the reply.

I'm afraid I have no faith in the police or the system and things have a nasty way of turning around and the innocent end up in trouble. I will NOT do anything which might jeopardise my dog, the breed gets bad press enough as it is and things could be twisted. He laid his life on the line for me.

I was in the house alone as husband and daughter had gone away for a couple of days. The front door was unlocked at the time so the scum didn't 'actually break in'. Another score for him.

Lisa,

We have got what is supposed to be green belt very near us......now there is a proposed housing development with exactly what you say.30+ luxury houses and then a small corner marked for affordable housing....The two types just do not go together. At the moment it is in the hands of the planning office with various objections to be noted.Hopefully it will fall through.

I was saddened to hear about your car damage BUT please Lisa do be careful when you confront a gang......too many carry knives etc these days and your life is more important than a dent in your car.

I hope the monster who came into your house nearly s**t himself when Gaylord cornered him. What a crazy world we live in when the victim gets prosecuted by the police.

Hi Maureen

Thanks for your kind words.

I hope the proposed development near you falls through. I know what you mean, luxury and cheap do not go together any more. Maybe if the only way these people could live in the affordable housing was if they actually had to get a job to pay a mortgage (horror of horrors!), they might then actually appreciate what a chance they have been given.

It all happened so quickly with the intruder, yes, I can honestly say he was scared half to death, he didn't even get the opportunity to move quickly enough to shut himself into one of the upstairs rooms. You have to give it to Gaylord though, he never made contact but boy was he scary at the time.

sadly it would probably be expensive as well as he would get legal aid and you would probably get large bills and if he was acquitted get a no win no fee solicitor to sue you.Let the dog lake a large bite out of him next time and then let him run off although he will probably never come near you again after pooing his pants once

I'm running for PM at the next election.

This is what my manifesto will be.......

Bring back stocks to all town centres. A public humiliation of locking them in the stocks and pelted with rotten fruit, eggs, veggies, etc. Afterwards, just to make sure, six of the best with the birch, again in public.

Corporal punishment to be bought back in all schools, with discipline enforced with a rod of iron.

Offspring caught causing any damage and their parents will be made to pay for the damage.

Sale of alcohol to nobody under the age of 21.

Offensive and abusive drunks who turn up at hospital for treatment, placed at the back of the queue until they have sobered up.

Conscription for all at 16-20 year old.

Just my food for thought.

I don't care which party has this for their election manifesto, they will get my vote straigt away.

Steven.

I just wonder if the youngsters in these cases started off running through others pitches and kicking balls between caravans?

In general bad behaviour is the fault of E numbers , lack of Ritalin as it's bound to be ADHD, a broken home or the schools!

Point out to a parent that a child is up to no good before it gets up to any thing to serious and you'll be lucky the get away with your life or get accused of being some kind of nosey pervert.

Is there not some sort of parallel between the odd little horror at your favourite campsite and Lisa's tormentors as well as something seriously lacking in the parenting skills and an understanding of good manners and what is acceptable to others?

LISA,

This is a ridiculous situation and I feel you have been badly advised by whichever Police Officer attended the incident.

1. The fact that the intruder did not "break in" and that your door was unlocked is not relevant.

For an offence of Burglary to be committed all that is initially required is that the "intruder" enters a building (your home) as a trespasser. There is NO mention in the legal definition of having to "break in".

I wont go into the full definition here but your Solicitor will explain.

2. I suggest that you either:

Make an appointment to see the Police Inspector in charge of the Officer who attended the scene. You can then make a formal complaint that the matter was not dealt with correctly and demand that action is taken.

Also not be dissuaded by suggestions that there may be implications re your dog. The animal was in its own home and did not bite the intruder who was in your home without permission. I fail to see where the Dangerous Dogs Act would apply here.

Or .... failing this ..... speak with your Solicitor with a view to him/her approaching the Police.

Had I still been a serving Officer I would (BASED ON WHAT YOU HAVE SAID IN THIS THREAD) certainly have arrested the intruder for burglary and investigated that offence with a view to prosecuting if at all possible.

You may want to watch Panorama tonight - it is on UK Policing.

The Policeman's Blog author is to be featured. This blog attacked the stupidity of target driven policing where a minor crime awards the policeman as many points as say a burglary but a burglary ties them up in paperwork so they can not go out and achieve more points!

And we know what points make don't we! - A screwed up Britain!!

He has now resigned from the force, and is moving to Canada to be a policeman there.

No wonder those who value honesty and integrity are queuing up to leave and make a new live elsewhere.

Grass is greener??

Maybe - but if your grass is nicked any bit of green is attractive.

Hi Lisa

Sorry to hear this.

Give Gaylord a bone as he was only doing is best and that was to keep you safe.

Where we live we have a little shopping place (10 to 15 shops) where the kids used to hang a round and get up to no good and they used to get up to no good in other place in the village. It would put people off going to the shop and doing things and people who lived in the village said that it would give the bad name.

Time went on then a MP who live in the village step in with other people and got the police to put a law in place (can not thick what it called so I called it a law so sorry if it wrong) were the kid or trouble makes can get moved on and if they did not they were charge and there would be more of police around.

The law was only on for a short time to see how thing would go.

To start the mum and dad of some of trouble makes and so of the other people who lived in the village and the MP and the police had a meeting to come up with some thick that would work and they came up with the law.

It has seemed to have worked well as when you go to the shopping place you see the police a round and all look well.

They have just had a up dated meeting to see how things have been going on.

It was said that the law was work well and they were going to let it run for longer.

hi lisa

sorry to read about your troubles as of late, and as sad as it is. I am afraid to say it is just a normal exsistance for some of us? you do get used to it eventually although the valium helps a lot?/. all those out there in the suberbs and the country dont know how lucky they are!!

we too bought our house in the early 80s despite the interest rate being 15.5% (but thats another thread) after renting for the first 15years and seeing the rent bill continually rise year on year decided to buy our own home in the community where we had lived most of our lives and bought one of the victorian pit managers houses in the small friendly pit side community. The house well run down took 5 years to renovate with the help of neibours (pit tradesmen)family and friends just about the time of the strike?? (another tread)

sorry I digress!! anyway the pit closed the miners left and the houses were sold by the new colliery owners to housing assoiations who rented them out as low cost housing ie to anybody on the dhss??
