Hello.

I'm planning to install a car radio in my caravan. I have a mounting box, 4 speakers & a radio.

i'm just not sure what aerial is best for a caravan. I need good reception as we use out of the way CLs but i'm reluctant to drill holes in the caravan. i was thinking of mounting it to the hitch cover.

We use a sky dish for TV so don't have a Tv aerial. i know i can get radio on Sky but my TV is 240V and i want a 12 volt radio, it'll also be good for playing MP3 players through.

any advive on Aerial typre greatfuly received !

Cheers Gareth

If you haven't got the radio yet think carefully before you buy. Many car radios are mechanically noisy, and there is often much more hiss from the speakers than would be tolerable in the quiet of a caravan but which you would not hear in a noisy car.

Hi woody.

I've got an old Blaupunkt radio cassette to put in for now. The logic is that by using as cassette adaptor we can plug in MP3 players. Next year i plan to get a nice header unit with MP3 input.

This all came about because I'm scapping our old Fiat & its got 4 brand new 4 inch speakers in it, so i'll use them & the old Blaupunkt.

i'll see what kind of noise the unit makes and consider the matter when I buy my new unit. Is there a figure for this in the technical spec of radios?

I'm thinking that i'll use an indoor 'screen mounted' aerial to avoid drilling holes in the caravan. Does anyone have an opinion on these?

Cheers Gareth

Gareth .. Probably not what you want to hear but I have a radio fitted in our van from Aldi no problems with hiss or any other noise whatsoever what you dont want to know is my aerial is fitted on the outside of the van

You could try a normal car radio aerial Telescopic, that will work but you will probably have aerial cable going through a window

I hope this helps .

Hi Gareth, Had the same problem, spoke to local auto/elec, he said they used to fit a rubber duck to the chassis, I didn`t fancy drilling the galvanised chassis though, so I haven`t bothered, best solution I can think of is a portable radio with rechargable batteries.

Gareth...you could get a 12 volt 150 watt inverter to run your sky system.

For an all in cost of around

I'm not sure what to do re aerial I think I'll get an indoor one, i used to use them on coaches with quite a lot of sucess, They have 12V input & stick to the inside of a window.

Re invertors, we tried it at Silverstone 2 years ago, it just flattened the battery very quickly, we had to plug into the car & run the engine to charge it up!

I'm now going to fit the new blaupulkt that came in my new Fiat panda, I've found that I can buy a plug in MP3 input cable for it. It'll give me Radio, CD & MP3. The main advantage over the TV will be being able to listen from any / all of the speakers, not just the TV speaker, now if I could connect the TV through the radio........

I feel a big job breaking out!
