What security ????

Being 26yo and used to my VW camper, i have sold it and purchased a 1998 swift fairway. The caravan will be kept on my drive at the back of the house out of view of prying eyes behind locked gates, however i still want security measures.

What security measures do you have and what do you think are a waste of money

Obviously i will fit wheel clamp and hitchlock for insurance purposes,

I have seen locks for corner steadies, PIR alarms for £9.99, Winter wheels with locks.

SO MY QUESTION IS WHAT DO YOU HAVE ON YOUR VAN?? AND WHAT DID IT COST???????

Otherwise, I think you need to consider using hotels or B&B,s for your leisure accomodation.

It would be cheaper and less of a worry to you when you are at home.

Here are two things you can do that will cost you little....

Put the caravan in by the side of your house, hitch (front)forward. Back of caravan towards gates and store without jockey wheel fitted.

Lock jockey wheel in garage.

This will make hitching up and stealing your van much harder.

It is also harder for you to hich up as well(unless movers fitted)

You may need a hand winch if you cannot get others to help depending on your drive layout.

You must live in the wrong area. The storage area where I've had my caravan (and about 50 others) for the past 16 years has just a plain chicken wire fence, a rusty padlock and my caravan a simple hitchlock and I've only heard of one theft from the site during all those years.

Yes the skytag is a good idea but its only letters and numbers for that price and they do nothing its up to you to contact police you could buy your own and fit them for a cheaper price and still do the same job

Max,

Do not, repeat, do not use the repeater stickers.

Rather than deter the would be thieves, they let them know that the roof is marked, then a quick squirt with a paint aerosol solves that one for them.

I live in a decent area, the problem comes from the white van people offering, tree lopping, tarmacing, fascia board replacemnts etc.

If they see the sticker they might think twice and move on because at some stage they would have the hassle of removing the roof markings but i take your point and you dont have to use the sticker if you dont want to - skytag say that they are resistant to most paints and most theives dont carry a ladder with them - If they did try to paint over them I think that the outline would still show and most whites are different so it would look odd and alert someone to report it

Hi Max I get your point over the price but I think Rod is right I wouldnt display the fact you are telling them about the roof signs but as we all know the people who steal the vans dont give a s*** how they take it or how to get on the roof to remove things the just wreck them and if you get it back its a mess. In this day and age all caravans and cars should be fitted with tracker with first year free( or included in price so you think its free) and then its upto the owner to continue payment. That would stop alot of theft but hey that common sense!!

I use

SAS Wheel Clamp

Alko Hitch Lock securing hitch to post concreted into forecourt.

Have not experienced any problems but as there is only just enough space between back of caravan and wall at back of forecourt to use winder on rear stays it takes a lot of careful manouvering with motor mover to get round the hitch post (which is getting well rusted into position)and as most of the time the car is immediately along side the caravan it is probably not the easiest of prospects for unwanted removal but undoubtedly not impossible for the determined.

I would like to be able to utilise the ALKO fitting on the wheel but with the positioning needed to get the caravan into position on the hitch post it is impossible to also do the required alignment for the ALKO wheel security.

On ours we have:

a remote alarm system from Keen electronics including amongst other things an anti tamper leg sensor

SAS Wheel Clamp on one wheel

BullDog Euro Clamp on the other wheel

Alko hitch lock and security ball

Soon to be fitted a security post behind it concreted into the drive

Its also hitch end up the drive which is between 2 houses and there its too narrow to get down passed the van so you'd have to crawl under it.
