What to do over winter

We are still rather wet behind the ears when it comes to caring for our van, having only owned outr first real van for a couoke of weeks.

We shall (unfortunately due to lack of holiday days) have to leave the van in storage between November and March.

Should I do anything, or put anything in the van to reduce the chances of any dampness occurring?

many thanks

Rick

all i have done over the years is put 3 or 4 bowls with salt in throughout the van and never had any problems with damp, just check every so often as they fill with up moisture.......

Hi Rick, there are a number of things you should do to your van over the winter, apart from the tip with the salt, as mentioned by magic dragon. You should remove your seat cushions,if possible take them home and store them in a spare room, if you have't got room at home, stand them on the floor, on end, so that air can circulate around them. Also, we always leave the blinds up, but close the curtains. You should also drain your water system fully, and make sure the fridge door is left open to stop mildew from forming. I am sure there are other things that members of this forum do, and I am sure they will pass their tips onto you.

Cheers Roy.

Hi Richard...as a 74 year old wrinkly caravanner, here is what I do to winterise the van , but you don't need to do all that I do! When you have drained the water fron hot tank, lay the shower head in tray and leave tap open.Drain flush fluid from toilet.Make sure there are not any places through which mice etc can enter.Never leave blinds and insect nets in down position for a prolonged time as the springs will become weak. Draw the curtains instead.A squirt or WD40 into the 12N and 12S plugs is worth while.I always remove the road wheels and leave the van on winter wheels (see Towsure website)DO make sure you leave the van hitched to car, car handbrake firmly on and in gear when jacking up the van. There are most likely more things that other enthusiasts like to do, but these are my main items. I wish you the very best of luck with your caravanning future, and hope you enjoy it as much as we have since 1973!
