I am excitedly waiting for my newly ordered Coachman to be delivered and wondered if anyone has any feelings on the best wheel clamps giving security and ease of attaching and removing. I currently Have a rise and clamp which is cumbersome and after 6 years is showing severe signs of corrosion.I quite like the look of the Alko one...thoughts anyone?

Hi. Jim. I got the AL-KO wheel clamp earlier this year and I wish I had got it years ago. If you have a mover, it makes fitting it a doddle as you can line the wheel spokes up with the receiver easily. Good luck with your Coachman, I got my Amara last year and it's the best finished van I have had in almost 30 years of caravanning.

Henry.

Thanks Henry, we have ordered a special edition Wanderer which apparently is based on the Amara with a few extras from Wandahome in Hull.I do have a Reich motor mover which will be transferred onto the new van, so the AL KO clamp is looking ever more favourable.

Cheers

Whichever model you have ordered it will be able to recieve the alko clamp. If you have ordered a VIP or Laser, the clamp will come with it.

I use the Bulldog Max with my receiver, it is much easier and cheaper than the Alko one, hense a two year court wrangle which alas Alko won and the Max is no more.

Hope you will consider joining the owners' club when you get your new van as well.

Hi Jim, I can recommend the Alko although it's a bit fiddly to fit having to line up with the receiver.

Mine proved it's worth on my first outing with my new van. Parked up in a service area, fitted the clamp. Came back 30 odd minutes later and jockey wheel was down. Think they must have walked away when they saw the Alko wheel clamp!

Hi Jim, the Al-Ko is the way to go and also the Al-Ko hitch lock is quite good and will be req'd for your insurance no doubt.

Don't forget to join the Coachman Owner's Club.

Have you thought about using a chain instead ? there are several "sold secure" available and they are much easier to store and carry than a clamp. Some very wide tyres leave sufficient width to fit a clamp and some wheel spats don't help either.

Chain can also be moved between vans when changing.

Hi Jim.

First and foremost I would recommend that you liase with your insurers to establish if they have a preference of model of hitch lock and clamp etc. After all, if you don't cross the T's and dot the I's with them they will use that as their "get out of jail card" to reduce their payout or not even pay at all.

After fitting the approved appliances, you could also add your own extra security to persuade the thieving stewards from making off with your pride and joy. The more time consuming you make it for the thief to get past your security devices the better chance you have of them buzzing off to easier pickings. Unfortunately you won't stop the determined thieves but making the odds of being caught does lead them on to the safer bet of a van with minimum security of one wheel clamp and a hitch lock.

I haven't yet come across and insurance company who accepts chain as a prim anti-theft device. You can of coarse add what additional security you like just so long as you don't endanger the life of the thief. Wiring the van chassis to the mains is unfortunately not permitted.

Have fun !!

Good Evening Jim

Bought a Nemesis wheel clamp whilst waiting for our Alko wheel lock to be delivered when we bought a new Pageant a couple of years ago.

The Nemesis is excellent piece of kit but the Alko beat it hands down.

Quite easy to fit if you go about it in the right fashion and is really neat and portable.

We ended up selling the Nemesis, it was fine on storage site but you have to do weight training to maul it round, good for ballast if you're low on nose weight.

The only thing with the Alko is cost but there again what's your van worth to you?

You're paying possibly in the teens of thousands for a really nice van so around

I too have the Al-Ko lock, it is sometimes a bit fiddly but like most things you get the hang of it. A mover makes it much easier providing of course you remember to line it up before you put the van away to bed, most times I have to start again when I remember the lock. Another thing to watch out for, my alloys are not regular 'holes' they alternate small & large and if you don't notice you can guarantee you will line the lock up with the small opening which does not allow the lock to fit on mine (Swift 535) Also got extra discount with insurance. Look on youtube under sold secure chains,it will make you think twice about using a chain
Wow, makes you wonder just how worthy a Sold Secure logo is. If I was ever contemplating buying a chain to guard my van I certainly wouldn't now after viewing the YouTube site video.
