That's a really interesting question. In caravanning, I haven't either although I'm sure Brian might be able to enlighten you. My neighbour (black caribbean has expressed an interest but so far hasn't bought a caravan).

Also, it's a question that has been raised many times in the equestrian world. I've been out hunting many times (before it was banned with dogs) and never encountered any people from ethnic backgrouds too.

Two postings , and the replies have been removed as the two postings referred to were racist and will not be tolerated.

This topic either stays very much ON topic, or it goes completely if any further racist comments are posted.

As the posts prompting mine have already been removed I am happy for mine to be also, but will be pursuing the perpetrators through the CRE and other interested bodies

I still don't know why. I raised this question a year or so back under the heading " Are caravans a white thing " and the general view was that it didn't fit in with different cultures, which I'm sure is not the case. My wife ,who is from India , often remarks that caravanning would be ideal for people from her culture as it is very family orientated.

My personal believe is that caravanning is perceived as being white and a glance though the mags and club books would seem to give that impression.

I think lately there has been a change in caravan popularity and it has shifted from being very middle class , middle income , middle of the road to being more a "hobby" for all and this , in time will change its appeal to other ethnic groups.

Difficult subject. I think a lot of it depends on whether the people have become "westernised" or remain loyal to their cultural traditions. I have seen people from "everywhere" on package hols to the Canaries etc, but very few non-white on campsites. From memory, a black family on the Isle of Wight and an Asian family in the Forest of Dean.

An Asian lady that I know simply doesn't take holidays. In the last few years she has been "away" just once, on an extended trip to visit family abroad. She is alone, and says that it would not be acceptable to go away on her own. Many Asian people have a very strong work ethic, and the little spare time that they set aside is spent with family - another big priority.

This is a gross generalisation I know, but I think the truth is that the vast majority of non-white people simply don't "do" caravanning or camping, and are possibly put off simply because it is so "white".

The question isn't limited to ethnic minorities. For instance, it has always puzzled me why, relatively speaking, one sees so many Dutch caravans wherever one goes on the Continent but so few from Belgium, although both are very similar countries with a similar population and the two are right next to each other.

To whom it may concern ;O)

To anyone with more than one brain cell it would have been obvious that my post was tongue in cheek and meant to be humerous. I realised, as has been said before on this forum, that there are all types of personality, some who take an active part by helping others and join in the fun and one or two who need a chuckle muscle transplant and rarely post, thats unless it's a complaint. Now do as you think is politically correct and move on.

I hope His Moddyship will allow me this response to your above post.

Lord B, I didn't see your post, so can't comment, but I'm pretty sure it would have been pithy and humorous, but, nowadays, it seems to be so easy to upset some people. More humour, say I, and less PC!!!

Before this thread deteriorates into what is acceptable , or not, please return to the Topic, and that alone.

To post any posting which may be accepted by certain people in private, but may, and has, upset others in Public, and which are racist in content is not going to happen.

To then blame everyone else for sense of humour failure is desperate to say the least.

This topic wil be kept under review, and unless the subject matter is kept to the original topic, will be pulled from the forum completely.

Lutz,

How true! We take great delight in shouting out "There's a Belgian" when we see one out on our roads.

Where do they go for their holidays .....or do they just stay at home.

As you say....the Dutch are everywhere )

We spent a week at Nieuwpoort last summer, and that's where all the Belgian caravanners were. Is it something to do with the Belgians having such a short coastline?

A strange thing last summer - we spent a week in Germany at Rudesheim, and about 40% of the units were from Denmark. Seemed strange, as we haven't seen so many in other parts of Germany.

To all fellow contributers and Mr. Mods 1,2 & 3 I have had a posting removed and therefore if I have offended any individual with the contents of my posting I apologise. It was not intended to cause offence and Mr. Mod. did say in his e-mail that he assumed it was posted in a manner not to cause offence but with a humourous side and as it was addressed to Lord B. felt it was just part of my banter. However I can understand his feelings that it could have been misconstrued and therefore in all other parties interest felt it should be removed. Fair enough the Mods have a job to do for which I respect them.

Here's another point. Remember "Goodness Gracious Me"??? They satirised the whole cultural thing of "I can make that cheaper at home". If a lot of these peeps do day trips out rather than holidays away, is it because of the principle that they are already paying for/maintaining somewhere to live, and don't wish to pay again? Just a thought.

You can't extend this theory to Indian/Chinese restaurants etc (given that very few Indian/Chinese people eat therein, except in places like Chinatown etc), because the stuff they serve is (I believe) quite far removed from what you would eat in downtown Calcutta or Beijing.
