The topic of "at home or in storage" is again being talked about in terms of neighbouring house values.

So where do you store your caravan?

Mine is at home and the neighbours are ok with it, but he has a "works van" outside his house so which one of us should be unhappy.

Mines on my drive where my car would normally be parked, close to the side of the bungalow. It's not in the way of my neighbours either side, infact they cant see it from their front windows. I've had no problems keeping it there from anyone thankfully and like others I find it convenient. The drive slopes towards the bungalow so with my mover I can store it A-Frame first making it difficult for anyone wanting to steal it. I like Barney's idea though, better than going out in the shed when I'm in the dog house.

Our caravan is stored at home.

It has it's own special space beside the house, safe and secure behind a ten foot high hedge so nobody can see it from the road.

We don't have any neighbour worries as we're on a corner with nobody on that side. It works very well really.

My Daughters just moved into a new house when they signed the deeds it states that they are not allowed to store/park a Caravan, boat or commercial vehicle any where on the property. This is one of the countrys biggest house builders and they apply this ruling to all the property they build.

My question, is this enfoceable, surly this must come under your human right to persue your hobby (dont know how you would say it in legal gargon)

Ours is stored in our "secure compound"!!

We live on an RAF base, did have it parked in the car park round the back of the house, but our housing department informed me I would have to move it as they had received a complaint about it being a health and safety issue - I reckon someone was just plain jealous of us and reported us.

Now she is all cold and alone about 2 minutes over the other side of the airfield :( but I do go down every other day to see if she's ok!

we have ours stored at the dealers, but sadly it no longer convenient to keep it there as they no longer open on a Sunday and dont open until noon on a Saturday! so we are looking at the possibilty of getting a digger to come and clear some of our back garden which is huge so we can keep it there. Does anyone else know of dealers offering storage and then closing on Sundays?

We used to keep it at the front of the house, but then worried that when we went away it was noticed by its absence ( we live on a main road ) So now we have it parked in our back garden out of sight....having a mover is handy as it is too heavy for us to manoeuvre into the space by ourselves.

Hi Paul

Yes they can and do so to varying degrees all over the country. Take my sister-in-law for instance they bought a new house in Worcestershire and their deeds restrict them from having a washing line or to hang washing in the garden in any form, neither can they erect a shed. They have been trying to get permission for two years to build a conservatory (including applying through the courts) with no joy as yet.

I have mine stored at a CASSOA storage site about 5 miles away. I have the same issue as PaulA in that there Deeds of Conditions on my property forbidding caravans, boats and all commercial vehicles. It is uderstandable in a way as people could be running businesses and maybe even get the squatters landing, so I am happy to live with it. I also get a discount on my insurance for storing it at a CASSOA site, in fact the insurance company (one of the main organisations) was concerned until I advised them of this. They felt far more thefts occurred from people's houses and imposed penalties for that.

We store ours a concrete base at the back of the garden at the back of the house which is accessed by a locked gated driveway and gates on the garden as well. Wouldn't store it at front as everyone know's you are away, and to be honest we haven't got a driveway anyway. Trying to get one for the car, but councils are very slow. Our neighour has 4 cars, and 3 works vans, and is forever chewing up the grass verges, and I personnaly think this is worse than a caravan being on the property.

We also have a big garden so the van sits on its own slab with power, water and drainage (and 3 cameras!)I drive in though double gates, unhook the van and drive the car out ,then push the van back against the gates and fix the clamps , chain and two Bulldog posts.(once bitten...etc).Getting out is more fun as for a lot of the time Im reversing blind. But with help from the wife ,you know, "ok,ok,ok whoooooooooooh!" we manage to get over 41 feet of outfit back though 11 feet wide gates at an angle.....Phew...Brian (",)

We have a few acres so the van is in front of the house but out of site of neighbours and others. All connected site and it gets used as a casual stop over for various friends and family.

We keep ours at home. We are spoilt a bit in that we have no neighbours to our left, right or rear just fields an orchard and moo cows. We have houses opposite but they are set back as we are. Couple this with a large drive and an acre of land we think we are lucky.

I must admit it is a worry that someone with less scruples will see the van gone (although it is hidden quite well) and take advantage of our absence. The only upside is we live in a very small village with a no through road.

I keep mine at a storage site on a farm about 10 miles away.

I live in an apartment block with allocated parking (expensive ex wife got the house) so I can't keep it here.

The procedure is that when I want it out I phone the farmer and he pulls it out of the compound and leaves it outside the farm house.

When I've finished with it I just drop it off again and he tows it back to the compound, quite handy really the only downside is that I can't get to it to give it a wash or air it over winter.

We moved house before we returned to caravanning, so we have no facilities to keep the van at home. We live on a main road/bus route, so our van is stored 7 miles away on a CASSOA site. It is a working farm, with room for 300 vans. At New Year, the famer towed it off site for us, about 250 yards down his ice-packed farm drive, then about 2 miles down the country lane to a huge layby, so that we could safely swap it over. He then waited to make sure we got underway. But I would still like to go back to the days when we had our caravan tucked in behind our bungalow, plugged into the mains, easily cleaned and washed before and after every trip. We dice with death packing and unpacking outside our house!

We store ours in our back garden, out of sight of the road & prying eyes. I toyed with the idea of using a storage site, but there`s distinct lack of them where I live(Halifax) & they all have long waiting lists, so it`s where I can get to it easily, can connect it to the mains, & do any tinkering I need to do.

We keep our van at the bottom of the garden out of sight.

There is only 2 inches to spare each side of the van between

the side of the house and a six foot garden wall before reaching

the back garden.Good theft deterent, got the reversing down to a

tee, mind you it took a while.

cheers john.b.

I agree Brian I have more than the pre-requisite 'two' anti-theft devices. I see the at home/in storage choice to have an equal amount of pros and cons. We have all heard horror stories of storage facilities. Take my uncle for instance he had a phone call one night to tell him his van had been destroyed by fire when a van on the site had exploded! As is always the way he never did get paid out for all his loses. I even heard of someone locally fetching their van out of storage in the spring to find a tramp had been living in it during the winter(you can imagine the state that was in).
