Where do you wash your dishes??? In or out?

Why do some people collect all their dishes and carry them to the dish washing area near toilets and don't wash them in the van, I am lost for a reason for this. If of course you don't have hot water in an older van or are on a non-electric site then ok but the majority of people I see are in brand new vans and def have electric. I sometimes have a laugh at the different carrying methods people use to get their dishes to washing area. Is there a reason I don't know about for not washing them inside.

Sorry if this is a naf thread just been trying to figure it out all season. What are you views

Hya Nicola, we do our dishes in our van which is a Ranger 620/6 as every time we have been away in it- the rain has been torrential and i hate the wet weather so the least hassle possible that's me!

Simple. Only a few plates, cups and glasses - wash them in the 'van in a couple of minutes. Big pile of dirty pans, go and use a big sink full of red hot water and a nice big drainer.

Pleasant to get out and about sometimes as well - I don't go away to spend my time shut up in a metal box. I've met some pleasant and interesting people while dashing away with a dish clout.

Chacun a son gout.

It's a social event!!!!! Standing at a sink chatting to other tourists sharing experiences. Where else would us men meet.

The Dutch and Germans have carrying baskets, specially designed for this purpose.

But on a more serious note, we have had accumulated alsorts of congealed stuff in the waste pipe, and when you are away for a length of time in warm weather it become smelly too. Caravan waste pipes have more corners and bends than Silverstone and each one traps the nasties that we put down the drain.

We always wash up in the van, apart from the grill plate for the BBQ, it is too big. We could not be bothered with trailing dishes elsewhere to wash, but there are only 2 of us.

I'm very similar to Michael, for the morning wash (ie. Breadcrumbs etc),we use the caravan sink, but for other meals with foodstuff and grease, we use the on-site amenities.

Also as others have mentioned, it's nice to get out and about to socialise, even if you are only doing the washing up,

best regards, Martin

We aer the sames as Jennifer, we wash everything except the BBQ in the caravan. As we travel in the summer season for our main holidays, the site facilities can be quite busy.

Perversely many caravanners like to buy expensive, large, well equipped caravans, but not use on-board facilities preferring to use site toilets, showers, laundry and washing-up facilities. Perhaps they're concerned about breaking the flimsy equipment fitted in the caravan.

I'm old enough to remember when budget caravans didn't have any of these facilities so it was vital that sites provide them, as indeed they still do for campers.

When I worked I often found at meetings, conferences, seminars or whatever more useful information, hints and tips were passed on in the Gents. than in the meeting itself. In much the same way the exchanges at the dish washing areas can be vastly informative rather like the varied wisdom to be found on these forums. I once was part of a group discussion with a party of Australians touring the U.K. who virtually changed their timetable after chatting to other dishwashers who had local knowledge of the areas they planned to visit.

And to be serious . . . . it gets you away from 'er indoors'.

Generally wash up in the van unless there's something thats really greasy like the BBQ.

The time it takes to load up your basket , walk to the sink , do the washing up then put everything back in the basket , walk back to the van and put everything away is just TOO much effort for me.

Time better spent chilling out.

(Cant wait for someone to bring out a dishwasher for a caravan...only joking!!!!)

Non greasy stuff done in caravan. The rest at the washing up area. It's a wonderful social. I stand there in my shorts and red crocs having a good chin wag and noticing some of the really weird clothing people wear for the ritual.

An absolute must if you are bored. Beter than watching the washing spinning round in the clothes dryer.

Cheers

Thank goodness you have the same weather problems, Sparkle. I was becoming paranoid at the thought that it was only us that owned our own private big black cloud which follows us around the country! On arrival home we can guarantee brilliant sunshine!

Following a trip to France I insist on using our onboard facilities. You ask why? It was noticed that there was a couple of women giving their poodles a wash and brush up in the washing up sinks. In the UK we have witnessed people washing down their trainers in the washing up sinks, whilst the site was quiet. Doesn't give you a lot of faith in the cleanliness aspect does it.

i wash pots in. it wastes time loading pots walking to sink unloading then washing them drying & loading back into basket walking back to van. thats a waste of time that could be spent sitting outside with a bottle of wine.

We thoroughly enjoy going up to the wash up.When its just us 2 we both go up, he washes, I dry. 9 out of 10 times there is someone else there and its great to have a chat. When we meet up with our friends on site, we(2 women) go up. While the guys get the awning/van sorted for our card/doms night, and of course open the all important bottle of wine.

I only ever use the van sink for cups and the odd teaspoon.

Outside Pot wash every time. More space, bigger sink, splashes on the floor not my van's carpet and best of all, get to chat with loads of people. Strangely, one of my favourite times in a caravanning day. Love it.
