Where to get tyres

Hi all, My 1993 Sterling Finess has one good tyre but the other one has a few cracks in the wall. Firstly, How stable are tyres with wall cracking. I know it's like asking how long a piece of string is but to give some idea, the cracks are only on one part of the tyre as if it has been stood for a while. There is no bulging and the tred looks fairly new.

Secondly, obviously I do intend to change this tyre at some point and even imediately if my first question answers that I require it but I seem to be having a problem finding somewhere local to do it for me. Do places like quick fit do caravan tyres. Because I tend to work most days I can only pop out for an hour for lunch and get the job done so I was going to take the wheel of and pop it down somewhere to have the new tyre fitted. I know they will ballance it for me but is there any tracking needs when it comes to caravans.

Thank you very much in advance.

P.S. I work near Glass outon, ponetfract if anyone knows anywhere round here that will do it.

Cheers

Gary

If it's cracking, change it, better still change both as you don't say how long they have been on the van. Tyres should be changed at least every 5 years, I change mine every 3 years due to size/weight of vans I've owned, all in excess of 23 feet and only being a single axle

With regards where to change the tyre, not all tyre specialists are specialsits if you know what I mean. You need to get like for like, not what they just happen to have in stock or want to get rid of. Failing that pop into a caravan dealer who may change them for you or order the correct size/weight loading, and then have it fitted at the cheaper under the arches type places.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

PS you could also try www.mytyres.net based in Scotland, very fast service and a list of approved fitters on their website.

Before you cahnge, decide whtehr you will be towing in Europe, particularly France, where tyres have to be suitable for motorway speed even if you have no intention of towing up to this limit.

Caravan Club has an excellent technical leaflet for members avialable for download on a .pdf file.

If, armed with the date you get from this, you can go to Quickfit or ATS or whatever, you should be able to ask for the right tyre.

If you happen to be "senior" ATS offers a 10% discount for purchases on Thursdays which will soften the blow a bit. Don't forget the spare, too - it could be that your one "good" tyre could be used for this.

Personally I would go to a small independent tyre man because I find they give cheaper prices and better service as they have their own reputation to uphold. You can always drop them off in the morning or at lunchtime and pick them up on the way home.

I would forget about buying one tyre and get a pair as odd tyre can have very odd effects on the vans stability plus you will now know for certain what condition both tyre are in. The cost should be around the

Hiya Gary, give Alan at Caravan Care Centre a ring on 07751 591799. He's a mobile caravan workshop,(lives in Castleford)has 28 years experience and does a 110% job. He has serviced my 'vans for at least ten years and I wouldn't go anywhere else. He does a first class job for a fair price.

Barney.
