Just bought a Tom Tom XXl and am pretty pleased with it especially the lane indicator. I'm sure others do it as well.

Not too sure about the paper sat navs especially when the misses has dropped off and the page needs turning!!!

Hi,

Have you thought about waiting until you next change your mobile phone?

The latest Nokia handsets now have Nokia's ovi Maps which includes free navigation,

Also the latest Android handsets use Google maps which has been updated to free voice navigation.

Maybe these will replace stand alone Sat navs in the future??

Stephen.

Would a hand held phone have a smaller screen than a sat nav and might you run into some difficulties if a "silly" copper thought you were using your mobile whilst driving?

"I was only doing me job sir"

Just a thought!!

I've got a Nokia 5800 mobile phone with a built in GPS receiver.

The OVI maps needed a subscription so I loaded Garmin XT & Map Source onto it and I am not impressed at all.

My previous Garmin device was excellent, but for me the mobile phone solution just isn't practical.

1) The application is very unstable and regularly locks up the phone. The only way to unlock it is to switch off then back on.

2) For continuous use in the car you need a cradle and 12v power supply. On the 5800 the power input is at the top of the phone making it difficult to use a cigar socket adaptor.

3) The screen is too small so you have to rely on the voice commands. (But you can route these via Bluetooth to the car sound system if your car radio supports this).

We are fortunate in that my wife's car, which is our tow car, has built in satnav, so I only use the Nokia in my own car.

If I needed to use it more often I would go down the dedicated portable satnav route rather than a phone/satnav combination.

Hi

Nokia have updated the maps for the 5800 and they are now free.

You will need to go onto the nokia website and download newest version ovi maps version 3.03.

This will give you free sat nav.

make sure you download the latest firm ware for the 5800.

I also have a copy of Garmin XT on my 5800 ( it took a bit of file sharing but its free),Trimble and Google maps.

I have 2 other Navigation systems a tomtom one on a pda and a blaupunkt.

Ovimaps outperforms the Blaupunkt and to get a proper overview of the route you need to plan it on the PC and then sync the route to the phone. Ovi also has traffic updates and "safety camera" warnings.

The tomtom one has the best route planning system of any of them with the ability to zoom in to the route, change the route, way points even select a middle of a field if you want- but the maps are now 6 years out of date and its a wired gps receiver so is a bit untidy.

I am trying to get hold of a system to mount on my Acer netbook but since its a linux system its proving a bit "interesting".

Of the 3 systems i now tend use the 5800 as its a telephone as well ,plus internet and email.

As for using the 5800 while driving, its mounted in a cradle and you can get nicked just as easily for holding or operating a sat nav system or even reading your paper atlas while on the move or stationary in traffic.

Thanks for the tip Stephen (Ayrshire)

I downloaded the latest version of OVI maps and also updated the 5800 firmware to the recently released version.

45 mile navigation journey today went well using Ovi maps and no lock ups like I suffered with the Garmin XT application.

Stephen or Phil, do you know if you can pre-install detailed OVI maps for Europe or USA on the phone memory card or does the system rely on a phone internet connection to refresh the mapping data?

It isn't a problem for me whilst in the UK as I have an internet add-on to my 3 zero contract, but I guess it will get costly overseas if the phone needs an internet connection to get the map data.

Thanks

Hi

There is ment to an option with ovi maps were you can download extra maps inadvance via your PC and use the phone in off-line mode. Although I have not tried it or looked for them. Have a look on Nokia's website or Nokia formums.

Internet is very expensive when roaming abroad.

When using a sat nav system it always advisable to check the route it provides before setting off when towing.

When not towing dont worry about it.

Also,in the settings, you can often deselect items such as unpaved roads .B roads, toll roads etc.

I have been using sat nav systems for about 7 years and have never had a problem, you just sometimes need to take heed of the road signs as you would when driving without one.As a Sales Manager i do a lot of driving.

As for paper maps, its an offence to read it while driving and there is not always somewhere convenient to pull over to check your route.

Hi Ken,

We have used a Tomtom Go 720 for 2 or 3 years now - and it's changed our life!

Obviously it doesn't know we have a caravan on the back but, using it's "itinerary planning" facility I can ensure, before we travel, that we will approach any site according to their recommendations.

Once there the "points of interest" downloads are invaluable:

We search for the nearest supermarkets and, from the list, navigate to the one we fancy to stock up with essentials.

You can download dozens of different categories of "points of interest" and they are tremendously helpful.

I wasn't sure how much use I would get out of a Satnav, but ours has impressed me more than I imagined.

I would thoroughly recommend a Tomtom - I leant mine to my mother once and she dropped it, damaging the screen. Tomtom couldn't have been more helpful - repairng it free of charge in the fastest possible time.
