Which satellite receiver?

Hi, I have been using a sky digital for the last few years in our caravan and it's mostly good. It does have a tendency to "lock" on the wrong satellite at times when setting up.
The digibox in our house failed recently so the one from the caravan was moved to the house. My question is, do I buy another 2nd hand sky box or are there better options available for the caravan (easier to set up)?

Hi Paul
we tried using a spare box in the caravan years ago. We took our Sky card from home and used it in the spare. A lot of faffing about and calls to Sky to get the card synchronised.
Yes you buy a card for life but will only get freesat.
For years now we just take our home sky box and use that. It goes us everything we get at home. After all you still have to pay sky!

That's one of the advantages with the sky box. The only thing I really watch on TV now are the discovery channels....what method do you use to aim your dish?

I bought a Prime sat 600 from the above.
King Sprocket recommended it. Don't waste your money on the cheap o's.
Also use sat finder app on my phone for the initial compass direction

Very good! I have been bordering on buying a good sat finder for a long time but was worried about spending £100 on something that was of limited use. I haven't seen that one yet. Up until now I just use a hand held compass and search using the signal strength on the sky box. Can be a bit hit or miss but as the season goes on I get better at it. Unfortunately I have usually lost the knack again in April! It's a big advantage to be able to identify which satellite you have found!

The good thing with Prime sat is you connect it direct to the dish before connecting to the sky box.Thus you virtually get an instant reading .As you know there ia a time lag using the sky box strength etc.

Find your local branch of Cash Converters. They will sell you a used Sky multi-room box for something between 10 and 20 notes complete with power lead, remote, and a guarantee. If you are lucky it will still have an expired viewing card in it which will still give you all the FTA and FTV channels and the correct region for the regionalised channels (i.e. BBC1, ITV.) The multiroom box has a single receiver and does not record, but it is also significantly smaller and lighter than a Sky+HD box.

If there is no card in it then it will still work but the default will be BBC1 London and ITV Central West. You can buy a Freesat-from-Sky viewing card from Sky for a once off £25. They will tell you it needs to be paired but in fact once activated it will work in any Sky box. The activation process can be done at home before you go.

Hi Paul.Im not sure which route you would like to go down. For some years now I have been using a Humax Freesat box. Its a no contract job and hosts many channels some of which you wont get on freeview. With the Humax box you can also by a dongle that turns your tv into a smart tv so you will also get on demand . The humax box I use is an HB 1000S and works very well. Obviously the the dongle works from wireless broadband so not god for away..I think my box cost me £100 but there are freesat boxes around now for less than £50. I hope this helps ,

Woodentop .If you want to use your Humx box for Smart TV purpose you will need a 150NWireless LAN Usb Adapter that works well You will be able to get on demand .YouTube Netflix but need to pay for that one . . Good luck and have fun .Sir Roger

We also have two satellite receivers ( one for the house and one for the van ) both Humax for receiving Freesat and both work well,When searching for the satellite with the caravan receiver try the following - it works a treat with the Humax receiving Freesat maybe it will also work for Sky.
With the receiver already tuned in to Sky -
1.Select a program on the receiver. (we usually select BBC1)
2.Move the dish until you get a picture.
This way you know you have detected the correct satellite.
Sometimes I use a satellite detector as well.
Works every time for us and takes very little time.
Practice makes perfect.
