Which towcar for a large twin axle?

Hi everyone, we collect our new Swift Conqueror 630 in a few weeks time, we currently tow with a sorento, but are considering a change later in the year, do we stay with another sorento, or change for something else?

Our total budget will be around the 20k mark.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated, thank you.

Have a look at a used Grand Cherokee V6 3.0 CRD , why settle on a straight 4 when you can have a V6 diesel with loads more torque and little or any difference in fuel economy.

hi andrew and sally Id have a either a land cruiser or a grande cherokee jeep. i have had a grande cherokee jeep but it was a 4 litre but a fantastic 4 x 4.

I have a 4 year old LC4. I regularly get 30 mpg solo and about 22/23 towing (up to 1900kg) unless using the air con then it drops to 20/21. Previously had a Colorado with the older engine and lighter van but mpg was about the same.

I tow my Swift Conqueror 655, 2007 model, with a Mitsubishi Shogun 3.2 DI-D automatic Elegance. Excellent tow car, engine and gearbox are superb. 20 to 22 mpg towing and 29 to 31 solo. When towing up long gradients on the motorway keeps 60 mph with ease. Good acceleration when towing and extremely stable in cross winds. This is our third Shogun.

I tow a Heritage 640CB with a Nissan Patrol 3.0. For the budget you are looking at, you will get a very good one with low mileage. They have a very high spec and I find it tows much better than the Sorento I had previously, mainly due to its huge kerb weight (in the region of 2500KG. I also get in the region of 25mpg when towing.

Thinking out side the box abit here..... have you considered these 'king cab' 4X4s? you know with the 4 door cab and pick up body? You can get some lovely hard top covers for the back and they always seem cheep compared to shoguns etc.You can get them with Leather, cruise, cir-con etc too . only problem they are a bit longer than a normal 4X4.

Gareth, the king cab type vehicles seem cheap until you remember the prices are generally quoted as less VAT, which as a non VAT registered buyer has to be added in, and the rear covers, cabs etc cost about an extra 2 to 3,000.

Also as commercial vehicles they have much harder suspension and those intending to tow a caravan are urged to have a Dixon Bate fitted to reduce the harshness of the ride and associated vibration to the van.

Some caravan manufacturers stipulate that manufactures warranty will be void if towed by a commercial vehicle.

check carefully before purchasing

Some insurance companies will not insure a commercial for private use either, as I discovered when I had mine. They can also be a bit light for towing a heavy caravan.

We are on our second Landcruiser in 4 years. Current LC [55 Reg]is 3.0TD [5speed auto]. Everyday we get 31mpg, towing 25/26mpg [Abbey GTS Vogue 418 MTPLM 1486kg]. Comfort and reliablity 100% - just servicing costs - not a single problem in 4 years of ownership - that's our kind of motoring - just stick it in Cruise Control then sit back and steer.

If money is your limiting factor stick to the well tried and proven Sorrie.

Check out the various mags eg Top Gear etc and I think you will be very surprised just how good the Sorrie is overall.

In an ideal world I'd love the Lexus hybrid 4x4 but the cost and teh replacement batteries are way out of my reach!
