We have traditionally gone down the East side via the motorways past Lyon. Now we are considering either the A20 on the west side via Limoges or A71 through the middle towards Millau. What are your thoughts please.

Depending on your ferry, bypass Paris (if from Calais - that side on the Francilienne, then across country via Vichy) towards the A75 at Clermont Ferrand. From there it's free all the way to Montpellier, and a fantastic road, with views around every corner. In addition you get to cross the new 'Viaduc du Millau' across the Tarn, which is an experience in itself.

Down the Rhone valley was the way we went to the Med. for many years, but now that there is the A20 or A71, the road through Lyon is the long way round, (unless you're heading towards Nice.) There's not much to choose between the A71 or the A20. Both are largely toll-free. The A71 perhaps gets you a little nearer to heaven!! My favourite route from Calais takes in Boulogne, Rouen, and Chartres, which all by-pass Paris.

approx how long does it take from Calais to Chartres? We are heading to Blois next week and still not sure which way is best. We had thought the a1 to Paris and then the a10 but not so sure now.

Not advisable to go through Paris. Taking the route Boulogne, Rouen, Dreux to Chartres is 216 miles. If you are towing allow four and a bit hours, stops extra. The only toll section is between Boulogne and Abbeville so it'll cost 9.70 euros for car & van. Most of the route is toll-free A/route or dual carriageway. Keep to the ring road around Chartres then take the N10.

It depends a lot on where exactly you are heading in Spain. We have always travelled via Rennes, Nantes, Bordeaux etc down to the west side of France passing through St. Jean de Luz where there is a superb site for a short or long stay(La Rouletta). This is because we were headed for Madrid and then south west to Portugal. Obviously this is not convenient if you are headed for the eastern part of Spain
