Barney,
Whitby, Yorkshire, is twinned with Whitby, Ontario, so your overseas posting should be allowed - bit of a long time on the ferry though.
Try placing a posting asking Tina for sites advice after half term - I think she is there now.
Whitby is very strong on Captain Cook heritage and I think the reproduction Grand Turk - as seen on T.V. and nothing to do with Capt. Cook - is based in the harbour for a while. Dracula still lives there - so they say - so if you do feel a bite on a moonlit night it just might NOT be a mosquito. Try the 199 steps route from the Abbey down to the harbour - or in the other direction if you have a masochistic streak. The North Yorks steam railway is near to hand as is Heartbeat T.V. Land. Go have a pint and a bite to eat in The Aidensfield Arms. York itself is not far and Scarborough too.
Whitby itself is good for several days exploring, also kippers, dressed crab and other seafoods. Any amount of moorland to hand for dog walks.
Give the Tourist Information Office a ring for fuller details.
We were there last weekend with Grandson who, concerned that we might try to sneak some untried kipper devil food past his lips, would only have chips on an OPEN plate and P*L* Mints.
Sadly most of Whitby was still in hibernation.
Hope this is of help.
