In the sixties: Paul McCartney and John Lennon, Long John Baldry, Rod Stewart, Van Morrison when he was in 'Them', all the Hollies, Paul Jones singer from Manfred Mann, the Animals, Georgie Fame and various other 'famous' members of groups who I've actually met and spoken to. They all used to play at fairly small venues near us, and in those days just joined people at the bar when they weren't playing. Long John Baldry bought me my first alcoholic drink in a pub - when I was far too young to drink! Those were the days, before mega-venues where bands are miles away on a huge stage. I'm talking about places like the Troutbeck in Ilkley, where in 1967 (I think) Jimi Hendrix played one song (it's now a Nursing Home)! The Hole in the Wall in Bradford, The Boulevard in Tadcaster, The Three Coins in Leeds and the King's Hall in Ilkley where there used to be decent groups on every week. The Beatles were playing in Bradford, and my friend (a Dusty Springfield look-alike) was invited up to their room! We saw lots of other bands over a couple of years, but didn't actually get to meet all of them in person.
Jimmy Saville - he used to run past our house almost daily - and I once gave him a drink when he looked very thirsty. Geoff Capes, at the Highland Games in Ashbourne, and he shared our watermelon slices, and chatted to my mum for ages. Liam Gallagher, in Woolworths in Pwhelli, when he was staying nearby, and was in the queue behind me with an armful of beach towels! He winked at me, as I obviously recognised him! Dennis Healey in our local garden centre, twice. Alan Bennett a friend's dinner party.
