I've just read that twin axle vans are 3 times more likely to be stolen than a single axle model. I've seen that some insurance companies do not quote for TA models. Can someone explain why this is? what's the attraction for the thieves? cheers andy

Hi Andrew,

I have not heard that before, ie that twin axles are 3 times the theft risk of single axles.

I would guess that TAs are bigger vans and so suitable for families to live in. I can't think of any other reason.

Tram is on the right thought pattern here.

Unfortunately certain members of the travelling community make a healthy living by stealing twin axle vans to live in and sell for cash later, when the heat is off.

Also if a 1700Kg twin axle van does get involved in an accident there is a lot of weightin motion and so the outcome is more often than not a total loss situation, which insurance companies find to be an unacceptable risk.

We actually have a 25 year old twin axle van which I guess is too aold for most folk to consider nicking and also as it is probably the last one on the road as only about 20 were made, it sticks out like a sore thumb in an identity parade.

I think Steve on Leo hit the nail on the head.........seen the numbers of nice twin axles being towed around by tatty old transits, and they are not all Tabberts or LMC's either.

Steve, you are mistaken in your belief that your 'van is too old to steal.

There is a lucrative market for older, lower value 'vans which will sell on quickly for cash in the pocket. It is also the case with older 'vans that proof of ownership is not often requestd by a buyer.

As you say, if yours was stolen it's fairly identifiable, if you can find it.
