Wi Fi for laptop

I have a laptop which is not wi-fi enabled, but which I want to be able to use at a site which does provide wi fi connection.

Can anyone tell me if the newtork adapters sold for home networks will also work with the longer range signals of such site provisions and with the hotspots in some cafes and public areas, or is this a different sort of animal ? I would prefer to get one with USB connection which I could then transfer to another laptop in due course.

The sort of thing I have in mind is the Belkin Wireless G adapter which has a lead to the connector, so I could position the antenna in a window or on the rool of the caravan to improve reception.

Sorry if this is all basic stuff but it's not my area of expertise.

We were recently on a site in Switzerland that had WiFi. I have a Belkin Wireless G+ Notebook card that slots into the CardBus slot on side of laptop. Worked a treat. Easy to install via CD
