Hi all.

We're going away tomorrow for the weekend from Essex into Kent. Just looked at the weather and the wind speed forcast is 22 mph with gusts upto 39 mph. How strong would the wind have to be before you would you decide not to risk towing?

Cheers.

Phil.

If it's going to be very windy I would avoid the motorways - too exposed and too fast.

A nice sheltered A-road should make things a lot more comfortable.

That doesn't really answer your question does it?

We are also in Essex and were due to go away tomorrow but have thought better of it. Its not just the towing in windy conditions thats an issue for us, its the rain coupled with the wind that beats on the van and keeps us awake all night!!

Thanks for the replies.

Rupert. Most of the route is along the A2 to Canterbury so hopefully it won't be to bad!

Valerie. Don't mind the rain on the roof, I think it's quite cosy!!

Cheers,

Phil.

From Essex to Canterbury, the two bits to watch are the Dartford Bridge and the Medway Bridge. At least on the way home you have the protection of the Dartford Tunnel!!

Seriously though, 22mph is not too bad and the gusts usually come with the rain. Just slow down a bit and as long as your van is properly loaded, you should be fine.

Obviously your speed must be adjusted to suit the conditions. In high winds one just has to take it easy, maybe you'll have to slowdown to say, 30mph. If that means that you become a hindrance to other traffic, your only option is to interrupt your journey altogether.

We did Worthing to Mildenhall in driving rain and high winds.

We wish we had-not.You cannot see very well in your mirrors Gusts and large lorry,s give complete lack of vision for a few sec,s on the windowscreen even with wipers on full. Very Very stressing. My speed was down to 30mph and some times lower just could not see where i was going. Mind you every body else was taking it very slowly BUT for White van Man.

Hi all.

Thanks for the replies. My main concern is the QE2 Bridge, but I think by the time we leave it will be busy on there so will be creeping over it in any case. Just checked the forecast and I don't think it is going to be to bad.

Thanks again,

Phil.

Don't worry Phil, if the wind gets too bad on the bridge they won't allow you to use it. They have vast experience of what is safe and what isn't and the last thing they want is an overturned caravan blocking their bridge.
