Windchimes

I'm wondering if anyone finds windchimes intrusive or is it only me? Its been quite windy here over the past week or so and my dear neighbour has erected windchimes allegedly in memory of his wife. Having had disturbed sleep for the past few weeks we spoke with our friendly neighbourhood policing team who in turn spoke to him and asked if he would lay them down at night as we thought that would be a compromise. He refused and apparently was "very upset" by the suggestion. Bless his heart two days later he has gone on holiday and left us to enjoy his chimes 24/7. Obviously he will want his memorial to be eternal and I cannot see the situation improving. Just wondering what people would do.

I believe that if one is very tired then they will sleep through wind chimes, lawn mowers and non-threatening noises. I believe if these things are keeping people awake then they are not actually that tired. Just my opinion and experience though.

Hate them!!

A couple of my neighbours have them, I think one has a metal one, and the other is wood. It drives me nuts, when I want my windows open at night and all I can hear is the "ting ting", or the "clack clack" of the bl**dy things - particularly as it been so windy over the past few days!! I can't see for the life of me what purpose they serve!?

Some people are "light sleepers" at the best of times and to suggest that if they are tired they will sleep through any non-threatening noise is, frankly, insulting. It doesn't only apply during the night either, some people work nights and therefore sleep during the day, not always without difficulty.

I agree, I don't like them either. One of our neighbours had a large windchime which made quite a loud, deep sound. Once you become aware of it it's difficult to "switch off". They got rid of it after a few months which suggests that maybe it annoyed them too.

Similarly, we often hear bird scaring guns from fields of cereal crops nearby and one you hear the first bang you are listening for the next.

I'm a very light sleeper and the slightest thing - be it noise, movement, light - wakes me up. I suffer from chronic insomnia and am always tired, to the point of total exhaustion sometimes. But that doesn't prevent me from being woken up by some noise, whether it's threatening or not!

There was a wooden wind chime outside our front door when we moved in here 3 months ago.....it's not there any longer! ;o)

noise pollution is on the increase , you can complain to your local council about excessive noise , one thing that riles me is the morons who pull up outside peoples houses ,they are too idle to get out of the car and sit there blasting there horn , and if the person is not out within 10 seconds they are blasting it again ,and the other one is when they leave they have allready said goodbye ,but they insist on giving a couple of toots ,dont they ever think of the poor nurses doctors and other night workers trying to sleep in the day

I didnt mean to offend.I was actually thinking about people with insomnia before I wrote the comment because recently a couple of people have been talking about it and I hope to understand it a bit more.I am just a very, very deep sleeper which is a worry too about what I may sleep through.Certainly there is a lot of irritating noise pollution out there.I hope things improve for those affected.

The original post was asking for suggestions.Could he perhaps move the wind chimes as another compromise or would you still hear them (layout of house/garden) or put them inside his front door??

I was just trying to say there is a massive difference between windchimes and someone shouting and swearing outside your window.

The point is he is not a man of concilliatory nature, in fact the opposite, appearing to get a kick out of harrassing us and being pigheaded. Don't run away with the idea he is an elderly gentleman, probably mid 40s, effin and jeffin all over the place, threatening physical violence but I tried to write the post in a factual way originally. We have had two relatively quiet nights after two horrendous ones. We will be making a recording of the chimes from our bedroom windowsill on a windy night and playing it to our Councillor responsible for environmental issues to see if he thinks it constitutes a nuisance. This has been suggested to us by a friend, also there is the possibility of taking a Civil Action which could prove costly.

dont even think about civil action unless you have a lot of money you are prepared to lose.

Record all the times they annoy you and keep you awake then pass the diary on to the Environmental Dept at you L.A.

Alternatively, get a copy of any gilbert o'sullivans records and play it non stop with your windows open.

He will either take the hint or move.

If only! Unfortunately he is back, just a short break.. However, to be fair I have to say we have had a few good nights as it has not been windy. Watch this space...

My advice is : Dont get mad - Get even!

Make your own windchime out of big tins and leave that out when you're away next or , better still, buy some rook scarers.
