Windscreen Repair

Several months ago, I got a small stone chip in my windscreen, and Autoglass repaired it on my car insurance It cost me nothing, and it does not affect the no claims bonus. However, the repair was slighly proud of the windscreen and so the wiper dragged a rain mark from it. I told Autoglas, who were very good and replaced it with no fuss. Now the replacement filling has come adrift, and they are are going to re do it. Anyone else had any experience of these repairs?

Hello Rod,

I had a stone chip repaired whilst on holiday in Norfolk last "summer"... It was done by RAC Autowindscreens in Norwich like yours, free. Mine seems fine although it is outside the area swept by the wiper blade. I was a bit concerned as I have a heated windscreen but all seems OK.

Hi Rod

I had one two years ago.I may have left the chip too long because within two weeks it failed requiring a whole new screen.

I understand there is a maximum size chip that can be fixed, not that big and it must be done very soon after getting the chip. It wasn't noticeable but again like Rob was just outside the swept area.

Cheers

Alan

The requirements for a windscreen to be deemed repairable are as follows:

1. The centre of the damaged area is at least 10cm from the glass edge

2. The size of the damaged area does not exceed 2.5cm (1") in any direction

3. It is not located within an area swept by the wiper AND (not or) within 30cm (1') of the vertical centreline of the steering wheel.

The latter condition obviously allows a repair on the passenger side, although it may be swept by the wiper. If the repair is standing proud, it only needs to be cut back to be flush and repolished. It should not be necessary to repeat the whole repair procedure.

It sounds as though, in your case, the operator had done the repair, but then forgotten to ensure that it was flush after the material had cured.

The size and position of the chip is, in my case no problem. It is probably less than a quarter of an inch diameter and is well over to the passenger side. When they first did it, it was 'proud' and they rectified that OK. Then, a couple of weeks later, the resin ( or whatever they use,) dropped out. That just leaves the small 'well' that they have drilled. Still, they are going to do it again tomorrow, so I just hope that this time it sticks. From the replies, it would seem that these fixes can be successful.

I had my A4 repaired. The chip came from a passing motorbike, i ducked as it came flying towards me.

I thought the windscreen was going to split!

Anyway it was at face level just out of my line of vision ,but i had it repaired.

The fitter did a good job, the wipers cleared it ok. But i could see a slight difference in colour, and so found it very distracting.

The windscreen was replaced, at home.

This is not a comment on the actual repair, but just to mention that if you have one done it does go down on your claims history, but doesn't effect your no claims bonus
