I have just bought a Compass Rallye 483 which is fitted with a Winterhoff tow hitch stabiliser. For the past year I have used an AL- KO 2004 on my old van and found that it was brilliant. Can anyone tell me does the Winterhoff work in the same way and are they as good?

I have be told that I cannot swap th AL-KO to my Compass is this correct?

Hi Jim

The winterhoff is just as good as the Alko. They were the first to have the resistance to pitching built in Alko followed later. One tip would be when unhitching dont pull the handbrake u,wind off the towball then quickly pull the handbrake up,if on a slope chock the wheels first. They can sometimes be really difficult to get off of the towball.

jim, i have a winterhoff and I am very happy with it. As has been mentioned previously they can be a bit difficult to release if the hitch is under tension. I have recently changed my car and have absolutely no problem releasing it, whereas on the previous one I had to ensure there was no tension, so perhaps the tow ball may have an effect. On the previous car you could adjust the height of the tow ball by adjusting a couple of bolts and perhaps that also changed the angle of the ball which caused the problem.

In any event I cannot see why you couldn't fit the Alko if you really wanted to, I thought the van tow hitch holes were standard.

I have a Winterhoff on my Hobby and find it to be superb. For my money the Alko aks range was only ever a poor copy of the Winterhoff. They're now on their 5th model? and they've nearly got it right now, although you still can't release it past a door mounted spare wheel. When using the Winterhoff, after reversing onto a pitch draw forward 3-4 inches to extend the hitch and it'll uncouple no problem.
