I have now taken receipt of my new laptop and forgot to order with it a wireless router for a bt incomming line. I could easily get one from the company I bought it from but am reluctant to pay the expensive 11 quid delivery charge - and am now bamboozled by the products on offer elsewhere,

can anyone out there tell me what I should get in order for me to plug into the master socket which is inconveniently situated behind the guest bed!!!! so I can get my broadband everywhere in the house which is a bungalow.

many thanks indeed

As long as you have filters the router does not need to go at the master socket mine runs happily from an upatairs bedroom I use as an office.

For your purposes anything marked 11g should be OK if you ned more range for an outbuilding or have thick walls go for an "N" type one.

thanks guys, about the socket though, it took me nearly 6 months to get my broadband connected because i couldn't get any signal in any phone socket at all, even the master one, in the end bt had to come to the house and what they had to do was to change the master socket and install one with a filter already in it, the engineer told me that there were too many sockets in the house for it to work (7) - everyone from the other development down the road is having the same problem and trying to get it resolved is a nightmare with bt saying theyve checked at the exchange and the internet providers saying we are switched on!! and to make things worse, unless your contract is with bt you can't contact them directly, you've got to go through your internet provider - usually on line - which is pretty useless when you're not connected!!! anyway, that's what it was incase you ever get to hear of someone with the same problem -

I have just changed my old router for a Netgear WPN 824 v2 Rangemax, it was a little bit more expensive than most on the market but has a much stronger signal (about 10 X) and is about 10x faster transfer speed.

It was very easy to set up and very secure with various types of encription, the only down side is to get the maximum benefit from range and speed you do need a rangemax adapter on your pc the inbuilt wi-fi will work but at reduced speed and range.

my router runs 3 desk tops 1 laptop and the nintendo wii all at the same time without any real speed problems.

Its a cracking piece of kit and worth the money if you need the speed and range.

Advice would always be to fit the router as close to the incoming line as possible, the reasoning is to keep the amount of copper wire before the router to a minimum.

BUT

Taking my house as an example there is appx 1000 metres to the telephone exchange and perhaps 20 metres of internal cable from the master socket to router and the 20 metres of internal cable is not going to make a lot of difference.

On an advertised max speed of 8Mbps I get around 5 Mbps which is pretty good considering how far we are from the exchange.

The only other problem could be an internal wiring fault but if the phones work OK it is probably OK.

As there is no circuitry in slave sockets the number should make no difference only the distance of cable, if you have wiring which is 25+ years old this could present a problem as the old 4 wire cable is not very good for ADSL.

Please try setting your connection up on the socket at your ideal location and see what happens.

I have some experience as an ex-BT field engineer and ex-BT WAN Project engineer.

Hi Sian,

I have a 54 mbps netgear router model WGR614 v6, which is connected via Virgin Media broadband , never had the slightest

problem , no difference in speed since fitting the router, it enables me to operate my computer upstairs , for security

I use the Security encryption(wep ) key.
