Witter detachable tow ball system. Problems removing.

We have a Witter detachable tow ball system. The type where the ball assembly goes up vertically into the tow bar receptacle. It fits easily, and if you immediately remove it (why would you) it come off easily. But, after towing the ball assembly is very difficult to remove, the handle pushes in OK, and turns, but does not release, you can try it 10 times then the next time you try, it comes away easily.
Any suggestions?
What do you lubricate yours with?

Mine is the same but it will eventally come away after a few attempts.
It makes me feel secure to know that it's not going to come away when it shouldn't

Thanks for the reply, yes it is very solidly attached!. I miss read the maintenance instructions and only clean the receptical, but on re-reading it does say use a "thin grease". Not sure to use either silicon or the standard castrol LM in my spray can.

Hi,
I have had the same isue with the same type of fitting - I have discovered of late that if I push the 'knob' in really hard and turn really strongly (using a lot of pressure) it does drop free, but in the past I have thought that it was broken and have given up - as you say you try again later and it drops off first go !
Seem the secret is steady but strong pressure ?
Jon
