Hi all
Does anyone have any comments on German markets, not wanting to travel to far in! and accommodation that's reasonably priced?

There are over 300 to choose from, some big, some small. Have a look at this list and see if there is something that takes your fancy:
Christmas Markets in Germany (in German only, unfortunately)
One of the bigger ones that is not too far to travel is the one in Frankfurt:

It has the added advantage of being not far from the Rhine valley so you can do a bit of sightseeing there, too, on the way. You don't say whether you plan to take the caravan or to stay in a hotel. There are a few sites open all year nearby and with 3 other large towns (Mainz, Darmstadt and Wiesbaden - which, by the way, also have their own smaller Christmas markets) within commuting distance you would have ample choice of hotel accommodation, too.

We always go to the Mosel but have been to Cologne once. We stay at a small ;hotelt in Bernkastel for 4 nights after going through the Tunnel around 6 am we arrive in Bernkastel around 3 pm with two stops on the way. Going on a Thursday and travelling back on the Monday. For more details of the Hotel see the link for the Moselblumchen on my website as with the signature below. Details and photo's of the Christmas Markets are in the Germany Info page. Hope you find some help. Lutz has given you good leads too.

Thanks guys

I have found a site smas markets in Germany in English. It list I think all of them... have looked at Aachen, Dussledorf and the Franfurt one you have mentioned.
We would be staying in hotels it's a bit of a trawl to get the van out stocked and drive just for a few days, plus we will have others with us.. Now I have seen some of the markets on line I really hope I get somewhere.
So it's just finding hotel or bed & breakfast that's not to pricey.
Did Brugge for a couple of years very expensive there!!

We are going to Cologne and Rudesheim Christmas markets at the end of next month. We are travelling by Eurostar from St. Pancras and staying in a hotel in Remargen, as we think that if the weather is a bit "iffy" it might be a problem with the 'van. We've got a package deal for £325 each. There may be cheaper deals available but we are not unhappy with the price.

Hi All (and possibly Lutz in particular!)
We're going on the C & C Club's escorted tour of German Christmas Markets from 5 to 12 December. The first few days are based at Camping Lindengrund in Guldental near Bad Kreuznach and the on to Camping Goldene Meille in Remagen - we're travelling down from Zeebrugge using motorways. From each site there are coach/rail trips to several Christmas markets.
My question really is about possible road conditions in that part of Germany at that time of year - I've driven 000's of miles abroad in the past but never in winter. Any tips/advice would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Mike

The pre-Christmas period is seldom affected by particularly adverse weather conditions worth worrying about, at least not in the region where you will be touring. The autobahns are generally gritted quickly should there be any frost. Snow is rare at that time in the area of the Rhine valley.
However, German law regarding the use of winter tyres is in the process of being changed and this change may still go into effect at short notice this year. Up to now, the law only stated that tyres have to be 'fit for the conditions' which is rather open to interpretation. On the other hand, requiring winter tyres from a set date in autumn to one in spring makes just as little sense if a winter is mild or if it sets in early. They are trying to work out a reasonable and enforceable alternative. It is generally accepted, however, that winter tyres are required for temperatures below 7°C.
Thanks for reminding me. I've got to get the winter tyres out of the back of the garage and fit them on our car when I get back to Germany next neek.
