• We hope all of you have a great holiday season and an incredible New Year. Thanks so much for being part of the Practical Caravan community!

You know you are a real caravanner when...

You know you are a real caravanner when you have survived the intitiation rite of putting up an awning for the very first time, knowing that the experienced caravanners on site are having a good giggle at your expense.

You know the look - person holding an awning pole, scratching his/her head and gazing anxiously at the rest scattered around them. Their partner has gone off to the showers in a huff! Meanwhile everyone else is set up and sipping that lovely first glass of wine.

There is usually a kind-hearted soul who comes to the rescue. I was very grateful to the chap who helped us through our 'ordeal by awning'.

Had a laugh last weekend. We took the van out for the ususal annual shake down test (first time out for new season).

Having been very busy for the best part of the morning it was elevensies time, a nice cupa and a piece of boiled cake (fruit cake, now all we needed was something to watch.

The only other people in the site were putting up their tent. It looked as if it was their first outing ever. Mum, Dad and two teenage youngsters. All was not going to plan, so mum started to get into a huff shouting and screaming, this upset the children who were trying to be piecemakers, she walked off, dad lost his his rag and threw down the flexible rods and started to kick them about the site,(the rods not the children).

This dissagreement carried on into the next day. By the time we were ready to leave on the Sunday 1st April they were starting to calm a little. We think they were booked in untill the 4th April. I am sure like the rest of us they will look back and laugh at it, We wondered if they will ever do it again?

We caravanners are a nosey lot or is it just us?

Regards

Les

More to the point you know you are a real caravanner when you are not entertaining the rest of the site. Haaving a plan with the awning and knowing where all th kit you need is and not having to much is the signs to look for.

Pitching up along side your pitch and a swift neat reverse in followed choice of leg winder to hand and the eletric cable out and connectd as one of you gets the water attaced and then a quiet cuppa and relax before cooly whipping the awning into place with no stress and fuss makes youe a true Caravanner.

The chaos of stressed out red faced people scurrying around piles of camping debris cascading from the tow tug and van whilst trying to find the leg winder or a charged battery for the battery drill whilst awning poles get dragged around the field does not make for perfect or happy caravanners.

Mum and dad tearing their hair out looking for the Whale connection as young tommy swings it about his head at the taps as he can't work out how to fill an aquaroll with it might entertain others but will not help family unity ;-)

So what did they leave behind Liz?

Real caravanners have all the gear they need for their comfort to hand or it lives in the caravan so they get to the site fully equipped, and real caravanners and their kids can live without Marmite, Heinz Baked Beans, Walkers crisps etc for a few days without the world ending or the family holiday being war zone ;-)

It's our aim to have an arguement and go off in a huff on a site in every county and most European countries. So far with either, tent, trailer tent, motor home and now caravan we have covered: Derbyshire, Norfolk, Cornwall, Lincolnshire, Dumfries and Galloway, North Wales, Mid Wales, France(x3), Holland and Northumberland. We find having the marital at the beginning of the holiday clears the air for the rest of the time and is clearly what canvas was designed for.

My wife is caravanning with sister inlaw as Brother is working. Not only did they get to the site with everything, they also got the Awning up in a flash they helped a family on their first trip away with a full Awning and have lent them an aquaroll.

You know you are a true caravanner when you cannot afford to pay the silly holiday package fees for Costa Del where ever and still enjoy a damn good holiday break.

Liz i know I am young at heart and I thank you for the compliment but I have just turned 61 years of age. The calender says 61 however the mind and body says I am far younger as I do not think my age. Pass the dummy.

Don`t scare me Christine, I`m a complete newbie and I`ve got an awning. Thought I`d practice at home first, well I got it out of the van laid it on the floor walked round it three times put it back in the van. Tommorrow I should have time to concentrate. Also I`m trying to make sure we have a properly stocked van. Spect I shall forget the battery but remember the egg cups!!!!!!!!!
