Isle de Re - park on the island or mainland?

Most of the sites on the island close at the end of September. Sites generally have a selection of bikes for hire. In addition bike hire is very easy throughout the island.

Isle de Re - park on the island or mainland?

My wife and I have visited the Ile de Re many times over the past 25 years - usually for periods of 4 - 6 weeks at a time. I offer my thoughts. The bridge toll is not as high as many people quote. Firstly, like the Severn bridge it is only payable one way - going on to the island. During the...

Hi Agree with Gafferbill - we always make the detour to Grande Synthe going in that direction. It is not a big detour. Stephen

which is it, to stop the midges

Hi Eat marmite sandwiches - they hate the smell that finds its way onto your skin - I have a feeling it might be riboflavin but am not sure. It certainly works for me but then I like marmite! Stephen

    La Bien-Assise

We enjoyed two nights here a fortnight ago. The site enjoys very large pitches and the general facilities are good. Quiet pitches are available at a distance from the facilities. Touring cheques accepted @ £12.95 - a bargain - cheaper than municipals in the Calais/Boulogne area. A real treasure

    Le trois chateaux

We were there at Easter - left Good Friday and people were being turned away at 8.30 a.m. as the site was full. A lovely location and Eguisheim is a beautiful village / town. The local wine is lovely. The site is very quiet and enjoys visits from storks. Very popular with Germans, Dutch and...

A word of warning for non-bookers...........

Hi John We were there at Easter. A lovely area and we loved the storks. Only one shower block open at that time - the one near reception. The water took a long time to run hot - 6 or 7 pushes - give it time! The other block was closed so I cannot comment. Whilst not the best showers they were...

    Assumption Day France - 15th August - What's open?

Most supermarkets have a 24 hour fuel pump using a credit card. In fact in many cases 50% of pumps are card operated out of hours. Have never had a problem using these despite occasional horror stories. Bakers appear to open as normal and some of the supermarkets open for the morning. In some...

    Gas on the continent?

Avoid Camping Gas in France it is expensive. Cheapest gas in France is supermarkets own - usually 11kg for around 20 euros for butane but not all chains are common in all areas. Alternatively go for a countrywide brand eg Twinny as already mentioned. I keep 2 calor cylinders for UK and 2 Twinnys...

There will be no problem in September - check first your site is open for the duration of your stay - several seem to close...

    Campsites France

Hi Enjoy your crossing to France. Visit a hypermarket in Calais and buy a copy of Le Guide Officiel Camping and Caravanning. It lists 10,800 + sites across France p.s. It's written in French but is easy to follow. Price 2004 appro

HI Have done both. We went vai Paris for many years. Last year did Rouen, Le Mans. There was a length of ordinary road which by this year should have been replaced be motorway. Traffic - much quieter, route more direct, NO Paris hold ups. Which way are we going this year. Rouen le Mans.

    OVERHEATING PAJERO

Correct me if 'm wrong but I believe the Pajero is an import of a used car from Japan as opposed to a car built for the British market. Have heard of such imports having theJapanese thermostats fitted and not changed for a thermostat suitable for English conditionsconditions.
