A new Equafleece arrived today as one our our had become damaged. If we are away in winter the dogs normally have fleeces put on at nighttime as we tend not to heat the caravan overnight. At home they have nice snug beds and the temperatures rarely drop below 60 deg f where they sleep as we are well insulated.
Never yet found a totally successful method of keeping snow from “ balling” up on their feet. I have to resort to manually removing it and melting it away. Although a quick paddle or swim in a pond/canal does the job too.
We have have had an Equafleece for our dog for years, with both a jumper and a 4-leg suit. However a trip to the lakes last year proved that a the 4-legged fleece with a normal dog coat over the top was not cutting it as he was shivering in the rain on Windermere. So I splurged on one of these Hurtta Waterproof Suits after seeing them in a Helsinki pet shop. They are expensive, but with our dog having virtually no protection from his fur (really fine hair-like with no under-coat) he needs it. Teamed with the Equfleece its like he has his own tri-climate jacket!

Our two dogs a first generation (Mongrel) Labradoodle has a bath twice a year and his feet do not ball up with snow, he will sit out for hours in the snow, water just falls off his back after swimming but I groom him a lot by brushing and combing. The small Rat , Chiuawa /maybe Corgie cross is the opposite, hates water and will roll in everything to hide his scent for hunting. , But both love the snow. .It's lovely to see them enjoy The Snow. But the small one will chill down quick if he's not moving around. You just have to watch your animals for problems. They have both been to Switzerland three years running in the winter, and didn't need coats, as extra.

We haven't had total success with prevention of snow from balling up. It is a myth that the Inuit have hundreds of words for snow, but we find that dry powder snow balls up much more than snow that has gone a little wetter or has laid down for a few days.
Soaking seems to be the best method of removing the snow balls, although this week we have taken a comb with us on walks and that seems to help a bit! We find that if we pull off the snow with our fingers, it melts and attracts more snow and ice to form.

Three of The Fab Four have Hurtta slush suits. They are great, aren't they? We have had ours for 3 years and they still look as good as new after many washes! We had to find an alternative for Ruby, who has a long back and fell between sizes. The suit was either too tight or swamped her. The Hurtta suits are available in the UK http://tidd.ly/84aa3395.

I LOVE watching the dogs in the snow! They are so playful.
You are right - you know your dogs and you will know if they are too cold. People often ask us why we go away in winter and do we not hate the cold. I often tell them that although we're in the snow, it's not actually cold! I was wearing a T Shirt for our walk today which was in bright sunshine and at 2000m!
