12v relays

Not sure where to post this but it's a technical question. I have in mind a simple low cost security device which will need a 12v relay to be continuously energised. Does anyone know if the bog standard 12v car relay in it's various forms will tolerate this condition (which is not it's normal mode) or is it likely to fail after a relatively short number of hours ?

I guess one way is to get a couple, connect them up and see how long they last, but I thought someone might know.

Why not use a 5 pin relay? so that when whatever triggers the relay turns it off, so the relay is only powered when you want to turn the power off.

Don't bother with a car relay, get a 12V dc relay and relay base from Maplin, they usually come as 2,3 or 4 pole versions with changeover contacts, much more reliable, simpler and professional than using a car relay.(probably cheaper too)
