Hello, I am hoping somebody can help us, we have just bought our first caravan a Pagent Majestic 2 Berth. We opted for the awning instead of the starter pack offer when we accepted the deal, where can we find cheap accessories as we have just found out that we have to pay around 250.00 pounds to add a tow bar to our car before we start buying anything else, wondering if we've made a BIG mistake, this is turning out to be quite an expensive start to our caravan experience which was supposed to be a cheaper alternative to holidaying abroad!!! Any advise much appreciated x

Hi Cheryl;Are there any mobile tow bar fitters in your area they are cheaper than shop ones,also all the other bits and pieces can be bought on e-bay,or look in your local paper or even Practical caravan magazine has items for sale,Hope this advice is any help to you;Good caravaning,
Thanks for that, we are toatally new to this game, all we have so for is the caravan and the awning, what are the basic things we need (that would have been in the starter pack)
Hi Cheryl.
You will need a fresh water barrel, and waste water hog. These cost roughly 35 to 40 pound each thats new. You will also need a electric hook up lead so you can connect to site mains. I would recommend at least 20 meters. Hopefully your van will have a leisure battery if not you will need one, thats for your 12 volt electrics . All the little odds and sods you can buy as you go along. You will need security devices as well such as a hitch lock , wheel clamp , alarm . You will need some security for insurance .
Hope this can be of some help to you , but once you are up and running you will love it .

Try Freecycle for caravan accessories - people give things away and caravan accessories may be on the list. You can post a 'Wanted' request too and ask for things.
Try car boot sales, or the free postcards in your local supermarket - and again, put up a 'Wanted' postcard for whatever items you need.
Have a look in the Classified section of your local paper.

Sorry to hear you are finding things very expensive, my advise buy the basics (ebay, asda and argos good places to start) and work up from there. Agree when you start out can seem rather on the dear side. If you can get a back issue of PC you will find some great hint in it as they costed fitting out a van, can't remember which month though sorry!! Hope all goes well and welcome and enjoy.

just to echo others comments.
Dont think you have to buy everything you need from camping shops. Often things you need can come from supermarkets at a fraction of the cost and do the same thing.
Maybe let us know what things you want or think you need and we can give specific advice.

I agree. You don't need a fraction of the stuff in specialist shops. Buy from cheap outlets. We got 4 plastic plates from a pound shop, for a pound, in 1993, when we started trailer tenting. We're still using them!

Don't do what we did and go out and buy loads of stuff.... just get the essentials (Aquaroll, Wastemaster, electric lead) and you'll build the rest up gradually.
