I take it that 1770kg is the Maximum Authorised Mass of the car and 2750kg is Maximum Train Mass.

If so, you can tow 1125kg actual weight - that's 2750-1770+75.

You also need to establish the Mass in Running Order from the V5 and calculate the towing ratio.

Hi John,

Assuming that what you have written or copied down is accurate, the important information is:

1. The maximum weight you can tow is 1300kg - but this comes with a warning:

2. Because you have a Renault (and they calculate this max tow weight differently from every other manufacturer), your maximum tow weight reduces as you load up the car.

3. So if you do make full use of the car's payload, then the maximum you can tow is Roger's calculation (maximum train weight minus maximum car weight) of 1125 kg - and this will be a safe working limit. This is a legal maximum.

4. As you are totally new to this - then the recommendation is to buy a caravan with a maximum weight no greater than 85% of the car's kerb-weight - which you reported as 1016kg. This is a recommended maximum (following good practice)

Summary:

You need to look for a caravan that has a maximum weight of very close to 1000kg (but never more than 1125kg), and hopefully an unladen weight of around 800kg or less...

And how many people do you need to sleep - just you, or you and a partner, or a whole wagon train?

If it's just one or two, and you like "cult" or "quirky" then an Eriba (various models between 500kg to 1000kg) or a T@B (around 500kg to 750kg) might be suitable.

If you want a box shaped van, then an older caravan model will be lighter in weight than current production models

If the V5 for the car shows "Mass In Service 1300kg", that's the kerbweight to EC definition (there is another definition which will give a lighter figure).

For newcomers to caravanning, it's recommended that the actual weight of the caravan doesn't exceed 85% of the kerbweight - that's 1105kg laden weight, which fits nicely with the 1125kg I calculated earlier.

With only a couple of exceptions (Eriba being one) the payload allowance of caravans is quite restrictive so you should assume it'll tow at gross weight, referred to as MTPLM (Maximum Technically Permitted Laden Mass).

You need to be looking for a caravan up to about 900kg net / 1100kg gross. Caravans get heavier, year on year, by about 25kg so you'll have more chance of a good weight match if you avoid new ones.
