hi folks , had new shape sedonna since april 2009 which we bought new , lovely car well pleased but when excellerating their seems to be a flat spot both towing & solo , its so bad that a couple of times solo its been quite dangerous & towing ive had to go from 4th down to 2nd on hill climbs , when owe old shape sedonna would climb with ease in 4th , any feed back please...c&p

We tow with a 56plate Sedona (new style).

Will be the same engine as yours but auto, we've had it just over a year now and tows like a dream as far as power delivery goes, no flat spots at all.

In fact often look in the mirror and think someone is tailgating, hills are no problem.

The only problem with the new auto's is that the gearbox starts to go all over the place after about 60 miles when towing, solo no problem.

You say it's dangerous with a flat spot, try going from 50-55 m.p.h. in 5th at around 2k r.p.m. to 2nd at about 4-41/2k r.p.m. on the motorway or dual carriageway!

Apparently Kia are trying to get a fix, hope it's soon because mapping out to have a stop for 10-15mins every 50-55 miles becomes rather laborious.

That's the problem it tows so effortlessly well we can't understand why gearbox plays up, it's like having a learner who suddenly decides to have a gear change.

So in short no, it sounds a s if something is wrong ours never lacks power, have you done the obligatory 500 miles I think it is before towing.

hi tom thanks for the replie , owe sedonna just seems a little flat when excelorating but soon picks up, while climbing a steep hill solo the car seems to be pulsating but only slightly but still noticebal, my son even noticed this same pulsating while towing in slight hills in france , every thing else about the car we like , when runing the car in i stuck to speeds of between 0-60 & never towed until we had covered 1000 miles...c@p

Don't get any of that with ours. Perhaps just needs to 'loosen up' a bit yet, otherwise I'd check with the dealer.

There is I believe a slight difference with the later engine like yours though I'm told to get the lower tax rate. Don't know what they've done though.

Overall we really love ours, just like I've said though it's a real pain when the gearbox mis-behaves.

We have the 2008 CRDTi Auto. No apparent problems once moving and certainly no problems going up hills when it pulls like a train. However, pulling the van away from stationary is horrible, to the extent that I hate trying to cross junctions without lots of visibility.

Pulling away from stationary I agree the acceleration from standstill can seem a bit lathargic but once away like you say our CRDTi TS Auto pulls like a train, can try it in manual, it's better, then switch to auto.

Love the way we can manoeuvre the caravan on site with it. In fact we've discussing it today, it's an absolute joy in all aspects, we can load the back up on late take off,s and it's relaxing to tow with.

Only problem as I say is the gear change after about 60 miles of running.

We towed to Cornwall via Baltic Wharf and back in hot weather last year , Shrewsbury twice, Bridgenorth twice, Broadway, The Wirral, Tewksbury, in fact for 9 months fabulous then all of a sudden after it's 12,000 mile service and the latest gearbox software upgrade, goodbye happy campers. Dealer swears it's not the upgrade when asked if we could revert back.

Apparently like I've said it seems to be post 06 models that suffer towing, solo o/k.

We're now down to planning journeys with stops of about 10-15 mins after about 55miles which is annoying to say the least, especially when you know what it's really capable of. Otherwise you risk random gearchanges and then lock down into 2nd.

We're told it may need an intercooler, which I specifically asked about when buying, but was told wasn't needed.

Anyway leaving with Kia for a short while until tempers fray.

Fear not though Dave not all Sedonas affected for some strange reason. If you're not affected you've a great tow car.

I wonder if your float spots may be something to do with the brand of fuel you use.

I have diesel Saab, and when accelerating I too sometimes get the feeling the power delivery is pulsing. I have established that it is more noticeable when using Tesco fuel compared to Shell.

I have the annoying situation that my nearest and most convenient fuel is Tesco, and any cost saving at the Shell garages is wiped out by the distance I have to get to them. So I only use Shell when I'm passing the stations on other journeys.

i had a new sedona in 2007 ( same model ) when that model first came out. mine also had a flat spot but what mine was doing was if i was over taking oin the motor way the cars warning light would come on and it would go into what the garages call a safe mode and only do about 40mph it was dangerous. the warning light would come on but when the car was switched off the light would go off and no record in the memory would be stored. the garage thought i was lying they had the car for 4 weeks while we drove around in an astra estate. within that 4 weeks i did my own digging and at random phoned a garaged down south told him the symptoms and he said its a common fault on them and its the metering unit which it to do with the fuel system. he had changed 6 of them. i told the dealer where the car was but they still didnt belive me. the machines they put the cars on to diagnose problems will only pick it up if the light comes on when its on the machine. in the end i was told to go and choose another car. i now have a 57 plate santa fe i love it and its a great towcar and an auto but i do miss the sedona and the space and the grunt of the engine i would have another one again.

a few weeks later i had a letter off dvla saying the car had been sold etc etc i rang the garage and asked if they found the fault?. they replied yes it was the metering unit grrrrrrrrrr so i was out of pocket why didnt they listen to me i hope they listen to you.

it might not be the same but it sounds simular.

Hi

I live about 200 metres from a Tesco filling station.

As stated on another thread I found on previous unleaded cars rather bad flat spots, but haven't really noticed using diesel in Sedona.

What we do, do though is fill up at a local BP or when convenient at a Jet filling station a few miles away.

On these occasions though, whether psycological or not, the car seems to run a lot smoother, it's definitely worth a try if you do use supermarket petrol.

Hi Guys

We had a similar effect with our 55 Sorento (had a sedona before) anyway... turns out we had a red slime from bio-fuel mixture in the fuel filter. Apprently a lot of the lower grade fuels are mixed ??? at least thats what our local garage told us. We now use BP fuels where possible and have'nt noticed any more problems.

A couple of years ago I test drove the 'old' style Sedona; with the raised air intake on the bonnet. It was 6 months old with under 3,000 miles on the clock. It was a diesel engine with an automatic gearbox. We were not impressed, even driven solo, at it's sluggish performance and 'flat spot'. At one hazard, about 1.5 miles into the test drive, I had to take the first exit from a roundabout which, as it turned out, was a reasonably steep hill. Not steep enough that it required warning gradient signs. From a standing start the acceleration was appalling, no I'd go further than that, dangerous! It just made it to second gear before the top of the hill. Each time i tried to change up to second the engine tried to die. Thats not to mention the tendency for the back to try to catch up with the front end when circumnavigating an earlier roundabout.

We drove sraight back to the dealers and test drove a 'new' shape Sedona, diesel, manual. What a difference. Powerful, punchy, crisp, taut handling, responsive. Totally different beast to the earlier model.

Not sure if this helps you at all, bearing in mind that my experience is exactly the reverse of the situation you described.

From my experience I would buy a new style Sedona tomorrow if I had the money, but after reading the 'flat spot' issues, am having second thoughts.

As I've stated in a previous post, our 56 plate new style Sedona has no flat spot at all, pulls like a Trojan.

Would by another tomorrow.

You posted this comment 2 years ago but I have the same problem with my 07 Sedona Auto, like yours after about 60 miles it drops down to second only when towing and to get it out of gear I have to put it in N then D, then it will be ok for a while until it happens again. Did you resolve your problem and if so how?
