3G and WIFI router

Hi

Sorry if this has been discussed before but has anyone fitted themselves, or had fitted, a 3G antenna and WIFI router in their 'vans?

Where we stay on Anglesey, we can't get 3G on site and was wondering if I put an antenna on my 'van, whether it would likely improve the signal?

Thanks for any tips / advice etc

hi Jon, if you cannot get a 3G signal I dont see how a antenna would help if theres no signal there no signal full stop,
I do seem to remember though the last time we were on anglesey 02 worked fine so a 02 dongle might be the way to go, instead!

Hi Colin

I'm on o2 as well and the only place we can get 3G is in Holyhead itself which is a few miles form where we stay.

I wasn't sure if an actual 3G antenna would act as a boost to the signal as my iPhone can't get it.

Hi Colin

Forgive my ignorance but in my stupid dog brain I thought O2 was costing a fortune. My recent move to 3G on the new tariff is free.
However, like WiFi ,3G isn't available everywhere. I don't see how a booster will necessarily help?

I do have another option, one we don't use, and that is linking in through a sat dish with a Prepaid Sky package.

Otherwise go to Pugney's water park, enjoy the scenery, geese, and horseflies, LOL.

hi DD, you may be right about the cost of O2, I did not consider that!! but as an option for a standby it should not be too bad, I have a 3G dongle, and only use it as a last resort, as I have Sky unlimited at home, and can use the laptop on either the clould or anywhere there is a WIFI signal, I also have skype so if theres broadband I have a phone,
the reason I mentioned O2 was the last time we were there (dulas bay) I got nothing no signal on phone or wifi, but the wife's O2 phone was fine, a bit weak and hit and miss in parts but mainly it was our only outside communication,
as for Pugneys "no comment"

Do you use a Three dongle or Mifi unit? If the latter stick it on the end of a pole as that sometimes helps.

Jon, we picked up one of the Alcatel MiFi units from EE as PAYG, on our last trip over as roaming data charges are just fierce. Worked perfectly when we were at Blackthorn Farm (although 3G, not 4G) and worked ok at Ty Croes Motor Racing circuit if you were at the TOP of the hill (dead as a doornail in the paddock of course!).
We'd previously had an O2 PAYG dongle and that really never worked outside of Holyhead.
Not sure where you're going in Anglesey, but hope that's of some help!
