Has anyone used the type of cycle carrier that attaches to the spare wheel on the back of the 4x4. I would like to use one whilst still towing the van. Is this possible. Thanks

Hello Ronald,
No I havent used one, but there are a couple of points you should be aware of. .................The first is there is a possibel danger of fowling the caravan when making tight turns, and the second is you will need to check if the weight of the rack and bikes eats into the your rear axle weight limit and thus reduces the nose weight allowance for the caravan...........................Please also ensure you have a tail board to put on the bikes if traveling without the trailer - remember the cars reg plate and lights must be fully visible from behind.

Yes I have used one, fits on the spare wheel takes 2 bikes and only problem was less room to get in the back of the motor.

This is on a Discovery, don't use it very often now when towing.

You will want a board if like mine it covers the lights and number plate.

Yes I use one on my Terrano 4x4.......It is only for two adult bikes and it has to cope with all the issues the Prof raises.......To do that I had to design and make my own as the strap on ones available to buy would not have worked on my tow car with my caravan..... Mine consists of a metal frame attached to the same bolts that hold on the spare wheel carrier........The frame is above the spare wheel and the bikes clamp onto it with their front wheels removed......The frame is unobtrusive when no bikes are attached so I often leave it fitted as it takes 10 minutes to remove / replace and spanners are needed......Because of the mounting method there are no issues with the nose weight of the caravan or interference with tow car lighting or registration plate.......the height of the loaded bikes is below the height of my caravan and the rear door opens as normal with the bikes attached.

hi, hope this is useful , i found on my discovery that the over the tyre type hung the bikes to low and got in the way of the hitch,
i made my own carrier by welding some tube to some second-hand wheel nuts and just replace the spare wheel carrier nut when required , holds the bikes higher and clears the hitch mine went to Denmark and back like this
also if you want to venture across the channel then the strap types are a no no !

This company claims you can .........but their carriers may cause clearance problems if you are towing and also restrict your caravan's nose weight.
