I am biased but I prefer Land Rover products. Yes I do appreciate that the build quality is not as good as the Japanese but the enthusiast movement for Land Rovers is just huge. The discovery is a great vehicle but as with many other 4x4's that big sideways opening rear door can be a pain when towing as it will not usually go over the raised jockey wheel.
We run a 20 year old Range Rover with 175K miles on the clock which with regular servicing just keeps going. I find the horizontaly split rear tail gate on the Range Rover far more convenient than the Discovery arrangement.
If you are reasonably practical most of the servicing on a Land Rover is a cheap DIY job. And spares are plentiful and inexpensive.
We are off to the big Land Rover show at Billing this Sunday - the show does not start until Thur 14th but we meet up with three other families from all over the country every year. It is a very good event and most people come in their caravans so I can indulge in both my hobbies!
Have a look at www.landroverenthusiast.com you will see a link to Billing and some short video clips of last years show.
If you do decide on a 4x4 - do get it checked out before you buy. Some of them are very abused.
