There seems to be a lot of 4x4s for sale at the moment why? Every showroom and forcourt has 3 or more. Have I missed somthing.

Hi again Steve, just to clarify, its deisel not petrol. Also, I dont mean to put you off 4x4s, you just have to have a reason to run one these days. I tow 28ft twin axle bailey and the weight means it needs a heavy 4x4 to tow it. If I had a lighter van I wouldnt run a large 4x4, but I like the space in the large van for the family so wouldnt sacrifice it - like I said I will make cutbacks elsewhere to keep the van and the large 4x4 - eg cancelled Sky subscription. Its basically down to personal choice, but if you dont need large 4x4 to tow a van you are happy with dont buy one. And finally we only do about 10 miles on the daily commute etc so can stand (at the moment) the costs.

Got a sneaking suspicion that Stephen knows exactly why there are so many large 4 X 4's for sale, and is well aware that it costs alot to fill a 4 X 4 tank with diesel, and he's a bit of a wind up merchant!! Either that or he has been living on the planet Zog for the last few month's! Don't fall for it!

Our Son has just bought a Porsche Cayenne 4.5 lt V8 when I mentioned fuel costs he just laughed. He said he wasn't born when I reminded him petrol used to be 3s 9d a gallon. The price of fuel is the price of fuel, so he bought what He wanted.

if he's a wind up merchant then he's far too subtle for me! guess my degree in astro physics isnt worth much! I wouldnt get shut of my 4x4 and towing holiday for one of those nameless CO2 billowing airplane soul less package holidays even if deisel hits

Hi Michael

I have been looking at Kia sportage petrol the sorento nice but to much to run. Also landrover freelander 1.8 diesel. After reading the write up on Kia sorento in Practical caravan June 2008 I give the 3.3 litres as pass. My Caravan,s a 2008 Bailey Ranger 460/4 MTPLM 1184kg and I am looking for a good towcar. I do very low miles to and from work but enough to keep battery charged if you know what I mean. I have also looked at petrol freelanders Budget is 7k and as I said there are so many out there at the moment.Looking at some of the 4x4s thay have done a hard days work but others the only time thay have gone off road is putting two wheel on the pavment school run just what I am looking for little use well kept.

Dunno about the petrol version, but I can wholeheartedly recommend the diesel as a great tow car.

Ours returns just under 40mpg solo (careful right foot, naturally) and about 27mpg pulling 1500 (plus) kg. The torque is sufficient to maintain 6th gear on most roads - on motorways 60mph equates to only 2000 revs and it just purrs along with the caravan in tow.

The automatic 4x4 feature adds stability and makes worry about wet rally fields redundant. Had one service @
