7 Pin Connector

This may sound like a really stupid from a total n00b.

My Freelander came with a tow bar fitted, so I have never given it a thought.

I pick my new Swift Charisma up on 01/03/08 and have just noticed that I only have 1 7 pin connector next to the tow bar??? Is this right? or do I have to get the wiring changed, I have seen loads of tow cars with two on so why has mine only got 1???

Hi Matt, If you want to make full use of all the electrics offered by your new van, for example, run the fridge whilst travelling, charge your battery, you will need the extra socket. I won't go into all the technial side here but what you need to do is take your Freelander to a towbar specialist and ask him to sort it out. Its not a bad idea to have your electrics checked out anyway. Its not a big deal but I suggest you get it done. JTS

Will they be able to change it from a single to double?

Matt, no it will need a separate feed to the grey 12S socket as it is heavier duty cable to certain pins to allow for fridge operation on 12v whilst towing.

MATT, get an estimate and the reason I said Towbar Installer is that he will be cheaper than Garage hour rate from a dealer and I find they are far more knowledgeable. JTS

Matt,

This won't stop you towing your van quite legally. The 12N (black socket) which you have carries all the road lights, indicators etc. You should check that this socket is working OK before you collect your van though.

Thanks for the replies, the car is only 6 months old so the electrics should be ok.

Is it worth spending the extra money to have the other socket fitted?

Hi Matt

If your new Swift is brand new it will probably come with a single 13 pin connector on the caravan, so it may be worthwhile getting a tow bar specialist to fit a single 13 pin socket on your car to replace your existing system, first thing to do is find out from your new caravan supplier whether it has the new 13 pin system, before you part with any money.

Hi there just a quick point 13pin electrics don't start apperaring on new caravans until the end of the year, wished they did i have just picked up my new van 2 seven pins whilst car is wired upto 13pin (bmw).
