97 ,2.5 td jeep ?

I have a Jeep, although it's a petrol model. A friend of mine has been dealing Jeeps for 25 years and expressly forbid me to buy a diesel on the grounds that they're underpowered, unrefined, and apparently have an appetite for head gaskets. The petrol model has a superb engine, smooth auto 'box, and in 25 years he's never known one to need a head gasket. In fact he assures me that Jeep dealers don't carry many spares of any kind because they don't often need them. On the whole they're superb towing cars but unless you absolutely must have a diesel I'd seriously consider a petrol.
 
Whilst browsing in W.H.Smith I noticed in the current issue of Car Mechanics an article headed "cars to keep" and the Jeep was one of the featured vehicles. I did not read the article but I am sure it could give you some idea of the vehicle.
 
Cheers peeps, the thing is , i want a trustworthy 4x4 , for about 5k, which also doesnt do bad milage !!!

another i was thinking of was the kia spotage ( karmann )?

any thoughts?

Dave I towed a Bailey Ranger 500/5 for over two years with a Daihatsu Fourtrack. Brilliant vehicle for towing - approx 36mpg solo and 32mpg towing. They are a bit utilitarian in their comforts but we had no discomfort or problems at all. The only reason we don't tow with it now is that the caravan was written off last year.

The only downside with the Fourtrack was that being three doors we had the inconvenience of access for rear seat passengers. It is designed to tow 3 tons and is very popular with the farming fraternity for towing horse boxes. A friend used his on one occassion to tow a double horse box with two adult bulls inside across a wet field in 2 wheel drive with no problem.
 
We have just got Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD diesel, what a machine, it has literally kmnocked the petrol models of the market. Jeep anticipate that 85% of New Grand Cherokee sales will be diesel. Only thing I would say is if you go for one make sure it has a full service history and hasnt had the service intervalls stretched.
 
im still steering towards the 2.5 td cherokee though !! maybe im heading for a disaster !!!

at the mo i have 1.8 freelander ( yes im hanging my head down in shame ) , and i gotta say im getting a little paranoid about the reliability, also its abit thirsty when pulling ( always have to have the foot down )

Have just parted with my 2004 2.8 CRD Cherokee as it was simply too thirsty. I was getting less than 20 mpg when pulling and not much more than 25 mpg solo. Also found it noisy and not that reliable but it would pull just about anything.

Only just got back from a trip so late on this one - BEWARE! - I had a 96 P identical model to yours with 86K miles - it was a dog and I have since learnt that the faults I had are "well known to the trade" Firstly the back axles on these are flawed, the bearings go at about 60K , the symptom is a loud whine at any speed - if left they can fail dramatically. Secondly the Engine is an Italian boat engine, true! - it has the habit of throwing pushrods when cold and is very slugish and tractorish. Thirdly they rust on the roof rails and under the floors at each footwell and chassis rail Joint. The electrics have a mind of their own sometimes and the ergonomics and dash are quaint in the extreme.

The only thing I liked about it were the seats which were comfortable and leather. I got rid after about three months and still have nightmares about the day it threw a pushrod and the quote for
