A mirror question

Just an observation.

Seem to be seeing more and more people towing without their extension mirrors on, we have them on even on a wide one like ours, short or long journeys.

Is it law to have them on when towing, if not should it be?.

Hi Martin,

I do believe that you need to be able to see the rear corner of the van with or without extensions.

I know in Cornwall this year if I had fitted the mirrors I would be needing new ones. On a number of occasions I had to swing the mirrors in when a white van was approaching.

Hi..

There are all sorts of figures but basically yes is the answer. It is also illegal to leave your towing mirrors on your vehicle when you are not towing ( if the exend beyond the allowable amount from the width of the vehicle )

Personally I think they are extreamly distracting and give very little extra view. If I turn even slightly away from straight I can see the side of my van and this is all I need.

That said I do have a permanently powered rear vision camera in the back of my van that allows me to read the number plate of the vehicle behind when in traffic in addition to the entire width of the road behind. I don't know of a mirror system that can equal that.
